Michelle Obama Mercilessly Mocked For Tone-Deaf Complaint About Life In The White House

For most Americans, the concept of living in a rent-free mansion with a full staff and security would be a dream.

Michelle Obama, however, has given her eight years in the White House a pretty scathing review in the years since she left.

During a recent podcast segment, she complained that U.S. taxpayers didn’t foot the bill for every meal she ate and every trip she took over the course of her husband’s two terms in office.

The Times of India reported on her comments:

“How do you raise kids in the White House? It’s dangerous,” Michelle Obama said.

“As the first black potential president, we knew there would be death threats … how would we afford it? Because it’s expensive to live in the White House, as many people don’t know.”

“I mean, much is not covered,” she continued. “You’re paying for every food, every bit of food that you eat, you know, you’re not paying for housing and the staff in it … but everything, even travel, if you’re not traveling with the president, if you’re [sic] kids are coming on a Bright Star, which is the first lady’s plane, w had to pay for their travel to be on the plane.”

“It is an expensive proposition, and you’re running for two years and not earning an income, so all of that was in my mind, um how would we manage this.”

The out-of-touch remarks instantly drew social media backlash:

Apparently missing the irony, Obama’s latest complaint came just days after she complained during a different podcast episode that Black women aren’t allowed to complain:

The Daily Caller‘s John Loftus took his own shots at Obama in a recent article, writing:

Never mind that her husband was making $400,000 annually as president for eight years. Never mind that a pot of gold, in the form of publishing advances, podcast deals, and speaking engagements, awaited them at the end of two terms. While the rest of the country paid for everything themselves, from rents and mortgages, healthcare and insurance, to golf rounds at the municipal links, Michelle couldn’t get her meals and jet-set life for free, and so life was just brutal.

All of Michelle’s struggles in the White House were worth it, though. Times were tough, but this story has a happy ending. The Obamas entered the Oval Office with a net worth estimated anywhere between $1.3 million to $1.8 million. In the years since they left, they accrued tens of millions of dollars, thanks in large part to lucrative book deals and media collaborations, and now boast a net worth of at least $70 million.
