According to reports, India launched missiles across the border into parts of Pakistan and Pakistani-controlled territory early Wednesday.
India said it targeted infrastructure used by militants, responding to an attack in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir that killed 26 people.
“New Delhi blamed the attack on Pakistan-backed militants, an allegation Islamabad denies,” Newsweek noted.
Pakistan claimed the strikes killed a child and wounded two others.

From the Associated Press:
Tensions have soared between the nuclear-armed neighbors over last month’s militant attack on tourists in the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir. India has blamed Pakistan for backing the militant attack, which Islamabad has denied.
The missiles early Wednesday struck locations in Pakistan-administered Kashmir and in the country’s eastern Punjab province, according to officials. One of them struck a mosque in the city of Bahawalpur in Punjab, where a child was killed and a woman and man were injured, one official said.
The officials said Pakistan had launched retaliatory strikes, without providing any details. They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.
State-run Pakistan Television, quoting security officials, said Pakistan’s air force shot down two Indian jets but provided no additional details.
Pakistani army spokesman Lt. Gen. Ahmad Sharif told ARY News that the missiles were launched from within Indian territory and that no Indian aircraft had entered Pakistani airspace.
India’s Defense Ministry said in a statement Wednesday that at least nine sites were targeted “where terrorist attacks against India have been planned.”

“It’s a shame. We just heard about it,” President Trump said.
“They’ve been fighting for a long time. They’ve been fighting for many, many decades. And centuries, actually, if you really think about it. I just hope it ends very quickly,” he continued.

Per Newsweek:
The Indian embassy said in an emailed press release that Indian national security adviser Ajit Doval briefed his U.S. counterpart, Secretary of State, and interim national security adviser Marco Rubio on the strikes shortly after they were launched.
India’s defense ministry said in a statement announcing the strikes: “Our actions have been focused, measured and non-escalatory in nature. No Pakistani military facilities have been targeted. India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution.”
It added: “These steps come in the wake of the barbaric Pahalgam terrorist attack in which 25 Indians and one Nepali citizen were murdered. We are living up to the commitment that those responsible for this attack will be held accountable.”
ADVERTISEMENTIndian officials also said they only targeted what they described as “terrorist camps” in the strikes. But Pakistan’s defense minister, Khawaja Asif, contested that claim, telling Geo News, “India is claiming it attacked terrorist camps; this is not true, international media can visit the places civilians were targeted.”
Local media outlets reported that Pakistan shut down its airspace for 48 hours following the strikes.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said in a statement: “Pakistan has every right to give a robust response to this act of war imposed by India, and a strong response is indeed being given.”
He added that “the Pakistani nation and the Pakistan Armed Forces know very well how to deal with the enemy. We will never let the enemy succeed in its nefarious objectives.”
