Democrat Governor Signs Gun Control Measure Requiring Card Companies Track Ammunition And Firearms Sales

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed multiple gun control measures on Thursday.

One piece of legislation strengthens a previous bill that requires credit and debit card issuers to track sales at firearms and ammunition retailers.

“We’re taking action to drive down gun violence in the State of New York — protecting our communities and making our streets safer,” Hochul said.

“Public safety is my number one priority, and by giving law enforcement additional tools to stop gun violence in its tracks, we’re building on our promise to put the safety of New Yorkers first,” she added.

Per NEWS10 ABC:

S745/A439 changes how credit cards categorize gun vendors, requiring the companies to use new merchant codes for gun sellers and shops. The bill drops ammo dealers from the law and covers only dealers of firearms.

“By requiring the use of merchant category codes for firearm and ammunition purchases, we are equipping financial institutions with a critical tool to help detect suspicious activity before it becomes a tragedy,” said Democratic Assemblymember Michaelle Solages, the Assembly sponsor.

Breitbart reports:

She described the ammunition control as one that “[refines] how credit card companies track purchases at gun dealerships.”

Hochul noted, “This gives law enforcement the opportunity to find out exactly who may be stockpiling ammunition. And this is an indicator that something untoward could be happening, so it’s an important data point for us to have.”

North Country Now pointed out the credit card tracking will occur via the use of a new merchant code, and that code will allow the tracking of not only ammo purchases but firearms as well.

One of the other gun controls signed by Hochul outlines new “warnings that gun dealers must provide to customers about the risks of firearms” and a third control bans what are commonly known as “Glock switches.”

Hochul explained the ban was accomplished by adding “pistol converters to the definition of rapid fire modification devices.”
