HORRIFIC: 17-Year-Old With Outspoken Faith Stabbed in the Chest by Rival Athlete at Track Meet, Dies in Twin Brother’s Arms

A local track meet turned tragic Wednesday morning in the town of Frisco, just north of Dallas.

I would normally give more information before including anything social media related in a news story, but I’m going to start this one a little differently.

This is the last post Austin Metcalf made to his X account on Monday, before tragically losing his life 2 days later:

Austin Metcalf was a junior attending Frisco Memorial High School with high hopes for scholarships and college — and by everything I am seeing, a deep faith — until his life was taken in a senseless act of violence yesterday morning.

The attack happened about 10am during a Championship track meet in Frisco with onlookers present and first responders quickly arriving, but the attack was too swift and severe.

What is being described as an ‘altercation’ by police broke out between the two students from rival schools.

It ended with Austin Metcalf stabbed in the chest and lying in his twin brother’s arms, where he would die, despite the work of his brother and first responders to keep him alive.

Austin’s family has since honored their son’s life and memory by telling the world about their son in multiple news interviews.

The local Fox affiliate in the DFW area interviewed Austin’s father, who said Austin was going to impact the world in big ways.

There is no doubt where Austin got his strong faith, after hearing his Dad talk about Austin’s life and death.

Here’s that Fox News report with Austin’s Dad, giving his tearful description of how Austin’s brother, Hunter, held him as he died:

I can barely believe the details of this story, and yet, they are the sort of thing we hear every day if you pay attention to what is going on in this country.

Kids are being raised rudderless.  No baseline morality, no understanding for the consequences, and no respect for the sanctity of life.

It isn’t guns, or knives, or sticks and stones that cause the uptick in these situations; it’s a lack of Godly upbringing because we have allowed the family to become a secondary priority.

We’re never going to be rid of sin until the physical return of Jesus Christ on this earth — and so we’ll not be rid of the effects of sin until that day.

Tragedies like this will always happen, but the degree to which they happen… is avoidable.  And that’s what makes this so tragic.

Unbelievably, Austin’s father stated that the 17-year-old who killed his son by stabbing him in the chest did so after he was upset when Austin told him he was in the wrong trackside tent, according to an NBC News report:

A high school student was charged with murder after Frisco, Texas, police said he fatally stabbed another student during a confrontation at a track meet Wednesday morning.

“Despite lifesaving measures by police and fire personnel, including CPR and the administration of blood, the 16-year-old victim died,” police said Wednesday afternoon.

Jeff Metcalf said his son, Austin Metcalf, was killed when another student armed with a knife got upset after being told he was in the wrong spot.

Metcalf said his son didn’t know the student who attacked him and that Austin’s twin brother, Hunter, was nearby when the confrontation took place and not only saw his brother get stabbed but tried to stop the bleeding.

“They were twins, identical twins, and his brother was holding on to him, trying to make it stop bleeding, and he died in his brother’s arms,” Metcalf said. “I rushed up there and I saw him on the gurney and I could tell — they said he wasn’t breathing. I could see all the blood, and I saw where the wound was, and I was very concerned, so I had to find his brother, and we rushed to the hospital. And we prayed, and it’s God’s plan, I don’t understand it, but they weren’t able to save him. This is murder.”

“I’m not trying to judge, but what kind of parents did this child have? What was he taught? He brought a knife to a track meet and he murdered my son by stabbing him in the heart. The guy was in the wrong place and they asked him to move and he bowed up. This is murder,” Metcalf said.

“You know what, I already forgive this person,” he added. “Already. God takes care of things. God is going to take care of me. God is going to take care of my family.”

Frisco police said they arrested and charged a 17-year-old in Metcalf’s killing. Police said the suspect’s bond has not yet been set and it’s unclear if he’s obtained an attorney to speak on his behalf.

Journalist Collin Rugg shared the following details of the incident, including a video taken from an interview that Austin’s brother, Hunter, took part in alongside his mother in front of the family’s Frisco home.

I intentionally did not share the full video report from local ABC affiliate WFAA Channel 8 in Dallas, where this clip shared by Rugg originates — because in the latter half of the report they treat the alleged murderer in this story as if he were the victim.

My previous comments aside, this was murder.  And yes, the 17-year-old who took Austin Metcalf’s life was in many ways a ‘victim’ of bad upbringing; I have no doubt about that.

But that doesn’t excuse murder, and I refuse to allow the villain in this story to become the focus — not in my story, not on my watch.

Here’s the video clip shared by Collin Rugg featuring Hunter Metcalf’s description of what happened:

Jeff Metcalf, Austin’s Dad, started a GoFundMe campaign to help the family have time to deal with this tragedy, and I have no doubt the money will go to good use.

Austin’s Dad shared the following family photos on their GoFundMe page, along with the following writeup in honor of his son:

I am Jeff Metcalf. My son, Austin Metcalf, was tragically stabbed today at a school track meet. They were not able to save him. He was a bright young man with a great future ahead of him. He was a leader of men. His smile would light up the room. His passion for football was unbelievable. Voted team MVP this past season and carried a 4.0 GPA. He was looking forward to taking his game to the next level. His commitment, dedication, leadership, and sheer grit made him rise to the level of success that he desired. His twin brother, Hunter, played beside him. We will all remember him for the way he impacted others’ lives. I love you forever, son. It’s not goodbye, it’s see you later. God will take care of us till we meet again. RIP. Love, Dad

Austin Metcalf’s church, Hope Fellowship Church in Frisco, held a prayer vigil last night in honor of his life, and to support his family.

The suspect was apprehended at the track a short time after the stabbing.

First degree murder charges are pending — as they should be.
