White House Spokesperson Roasts Rep. Maxine Waters: ‘Good Reason Why We Need Term Limits’

Few far-left voices in Congress have launched more verbal attacks against conservatives — and President Donald Trump in particular — than U.S. Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), who has served in the U.S. House of Representatives for about three and a half decades.

Her long and often controversial record has led one top spokesperson for the Trump administration to publicly advocate for her retirement.

As the Daily Caller reported:

White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary Harrison Fields criticized Democratic California Rep. Maxine Waters on Fox Business Friday, suggesting that her retirement would be a good thing for the U.S. Capitol.

During the Democrats’ annual issues retreat in Northern Virginia Friday, Waters accused President Donald Trump of trying to incite violence and start a civil war through disruptive policies like imposing tariffs, firing federal employees, and empowering Elon Musk to dismantle government services. In an appearance on “The Evening Edit,” Fields responded and said Waters is “not a credible voice” and recounted her past calls for confrontational protests against Republicans.

“Maxine Waters is another good reason why we need term limits. This is a woman that entered Congress before I was even born. At 86 years old, she is still spewing the same crazy stuff that she spewed over 30 years ago,” Fields told host Elizabeth MacDonald. “Maxine Waters is not a credible voice.”

Fields continued by referencing Waters’ past remarks encouraging confrontations with Republicans.

Waters’ over-the-top rhetoric has earned her significant criticism over the course of her career in public office:

Of course, even without her penchant for using threatening language against her political rivals, the 86-year-old lawmaker is one of many elected officials who have fueled calls for term limits in recent years.

As Pew Research Center reported in 2023:

Reflecting the public’s unhappiness with the U.S. political system, there is broad support for a number of significant structural changes to politics:

Term limits for members of Congress. An overwhelming majority of adults (87%) favor limiting the number of terms that members of Congress are allowed to serve. This includes a majority (56%) who strongly favor this proposal; just 12% are opposed.

Maximum age limits for elected officials in Washington, D.C., and Supreme Court justices. Nearly eight-in-ten adults (79%) favor maximum age limits for elected officials in Washington, while 74% favor a maximum age limit for Supreme Court justices.
