Lutnick Sets The Record Straight On President Trump’s Agenda: ‘This Is The Way You Run The Country’

President Donald Trump has come under constant attack from the left since returning to the White House, which hasn’t come as a surprise to millions of Americans who have witnessed the Democratic Party’s animosity toward him over the past decade.

But as even some of his supporters start to buy into the mainstream media’s narrative that policies like new trade deals, budget cuts, and border security are actually dangerous, one Cabinet official is stepping in to clear the air.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick recently appeared on NBC News and used the opportunity to defend the Trump agenda, as The Hill reported:

“This is the way you run the country,” Lutnick said on NBC News’s “Meet the Press” with Kristen Welker. “You shut the border. You get our neighbors to do their job. It’s not only us who has to do their job. Why are our neighbors, who live and breathe off our economy, not taking care of America?”

After months of threats, Trump’s 25 percent tariffs went into effect this week against America’s neighbors to the north, marking a turning point in the relationship between the U.S. and two of its top trading partners.

But days later, Trump signed off on tariff exemptions for most imports from Canada and Mexico, delaying their implementation until April 2 — at which point the president plans to impose reciprocal tariffs on foreign nations that have duties on U.S. imports.

Lutnick stressed the issue is about the flow of fentanyl.

Of course, Lutnick is not the only one chronicling Trump’s efforts to advance the MAGA agenda:

Trump has also repeatedly defended his own policies, particularly his pursuit of reciprocal tariffs:

The New York Post also covered Lutnick’s remarks during his recent “Meet the Press” interview:

Shortly after imposing the tariffs, Trump quickly added significant carveouts to ease the impact of the duties on imports.

He relaxed tariffs on auto imports and then exempted products or services that are subject to the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA), the trade pact he negotiated during his first term.

“Everybody who’s outside that deal, who took the risk, who didn’t pay attention and respect the agreements that President Trump made his first term, they’re going to pay a 25% tariff,” Lutnick explained.

“And that’s sort of like meeting in the middle,” he added. “Canada and Mexico promised they are going to crush the border and they’re going to crush fentanyl. And that’s what our president is here to do, to stop fentanyl killing Americans.”

As for when the tariffs will end, Lutnick reiterated that it depends on whether Mexico and Canada step up.

“If fentanyl ends, I think these will come off, but if fentanyl does not end, or he’s uncertain about it, they will stay this way until he is comfortable,” Lutnick said.

“This is black and white. You’ve got to save American lives.”
