Vice President JD Vance wasn’t shy during British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent visit to the White House and called out the European leader’s restriction of free speech.
The topic of free speech was brought up when a reporter asked JD Vance if he stood by his comments at the Munich Security Conference, where he railed European leaders for their censorship techniques.
Vance responded to the reporter by sharing, ” I said what I said, which is that we do have, of course, a special relationship with our friends in the UK and also with some of our European allies.”
He added, “We also know that there have been infringements on free speech that actually affect not just the British, of course, what the British do in their own country is up to them.”

Here’s what The New York Post reported:
The “special relationship” between the US and the UK got awkward Thursday, when Vice President JD Vance confronted British Prime Minister Keir Starmer in the Oval Office over the longtime American ally’s weakening of freedom of speech.
Earlier this month, at the Munich Security Conference, Vance had riled European opinion by decrying what he called “the threat from within, the retreat of Europe from some of its most fundamental values—values shared with the United States of America.”
Vance stood by his comments Thursday when pressed by a reporter, saying: “I said what I said, which is that we do have, of course, a special relationship with our friends in the UK and also with some of our European allies.
“But we also know that there have been infringements on free speech that actually affect not just the British, of course, what the British do in their own country is up to them,” the 40-year-old added, “but also affect American technology companies and, by extension, American citizens. So that is something that we’ll talk about today at lunch.”

Per Sky News:
Mr Vance was also present, and was invited by his boss to expand on his recent claims that free speech is “in retreat” in the UK and Europe and there had been a “backside” of rights for religious Britons.
ADVERTISEMENTHe doubled down on the remarks, claiming it is something that affects US tech companies and, therefore, American citizens.
He said: “We do have of course a special relationship with our friends in the UK and also our European allies, but we also know there have been infringements on free speech that affect not just the British – what the British do in their own country is up to them – but also affect American technology companies and by extension, American citizens.
“So that’s something we will talk about at lunch.”
