President Donald Trump returned to office last month with a clear mandate from the American people to repair the damage inflicted on the country during the Biden administration.
Of course, achieving many of his domestic and foreign policy goals will require action by Congress, so the thin GOP majority in both chambers will be pivotal in passing key bills along the way.
But as one prominent House Republican explained, there are a few other tools at lawmakers’ disposal when it comes to advancing legislation as quickly as possible.
As Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) recently told Breitbart:
The Ohio congressman said that the timeline to enact Trump’s legislative agenda will be “pretty aggressive,” noting that they plan to first pass a budget resolution within the next couple of weeks.
Jordan said that they will accomplish much of this Congress’s legislative agenda through a parliamentary procedure known as budgetary reconciliation.
“You’re supposed to reconcile money going out with money going in and you do that in the ten-year — or what’s typically referred to in Washington speak, Washington lingo, as the ten-year budget window,” Jordan said, noting that the process allows the party in power, in this case the Republicans, to pass legislation without needing to clear the 60-vote filibuster threshold in the Senate.
He said that the budget resolutions that Republicans will pass will contain instructions for each committee to either find savings or increase spending, depending on the desired outcome.
ADVERTISEMENTJordan emphasized that Judiciary Committee will be one of the committees that will spend money in the reconciliation process to find ways to secure the border. He cited the need for additional border agents, drones, funding to build the wall on the southern border, and more.
The Republican Party’s narrow congressional majority has sparked significant discussion in the weeks since the election:

That majority was enough to secure Trump’s first legislative win just a few days into his second term, as Fox News reported:
President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law on Wednesday, marking the first piece of legislation to become law in his second administration.
“This horrific atrocity should never have been allowed to happen,” Trump told reporters ahead of signing the legislation. “And as president, I’m fighting every single day to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.”
The measure, which advanced through the House and Senate in January, directs Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) to detain illegal immigrants arrested or charged with theft-related crimes, or those accused of assaulting a police officer.
The law also allows states to sue the Department of Homeland Security for harm caused to their citizens because of illegal immigration.
ADVERTISEMENTThe law’s name honors a nursing student who was killed during a jog on the University of Georgia’s campus by an illegal immigrant. Jose Ibarra, who previously had been arrested but never detained by ICE, received a life prison sentence for killing 22-year-old Laken Riley.
Riley’s mother was present for the signing ceremony and offered her reaction:
