DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas Gets Bad News, Back In The Hot Seat

Department of Homeland Security Chief Alejandro Mayorkas has gotten bad news as the impeachment articles against him advance.

Along with 11 other lawmakers, Speaker Mike Johnson announced that the Articles of Impeachment against Mayorkas would be submitted to the Senate on April 10, 2024. Speaker Mike Johnson had this to say on Tuesday:

“Together with the 11 House impeachment managers, I sent a letter to Senator Schumer telling him we’ll deliver the articles of Secretary Mayorkas’ impeachment to the Senate on April 10th and that he must hold a full trial.

The American people deserve accountability.” Other GOP lawmakers echoed Johnson’s comments:

Fox News reports:

Once the articles are formally handed off, the Senate must act on them swiftly.

Schumer has not said what he would do, but his public criticism of the impeachment effort suggests it’s very possible that he’ll move to dismiss the trial.

A simple 51-vote majority would be needed for that to occur.

Chad Pergram laid out the next steps in the Mayorkas impeachment below and seemed to cast doubt on the ouster of Mayorkas.

There is a bit of ceremony when the House sends over the articles.

House Sergeant at Arms Bill McFarland and the Acting Clerk of the House escort the articles themselves and the impeachment managers across the Capitol Dome to the Senate.

4) The managers are recognized by the Senate and the articles are presented.

By the book, the Senate is SUPPOSED to wait a day before getting deeper into the trial. That involves the swearing in of senators as jurors. But Fox has been told this may all happen on April 10.

6) That could be a tough proposition for Democrats facing challenging re-election bids like Sens. Jon Tester (D-MT) and Sherrod Brown (D-OH). Republicans would love to get those senators on the record, voting to extinguish the impeachment trial.

8) But the Senate MUST AT LEAST GET THROUGH swearing-in the senators as jurors and voting to either exonerate/convict Mayorkas or short-circuit the rest of the trial.

It takes a two-thirds vote to convict in an impeachment trial.

CNN claimed:

House Republicans had intentionally not sent the impeachment articles over to the Senate until Congress completed addressing government funding for this fiscal year, as CNN previously reported.

Both chambers do not return back into session until the week of April 8.
