Major U-Turn? NYC Mayor Calls For Sanctuary City Law To Be Changed To Allow For Deportations

Did NYC Mayor Eric Adams just realize the error of his ways and admit that sanctuary cities are a dangerous failure?

It appears so.

In a turnaround from his earlier defense of so-called ‘sanctuary cities’ where illegal immigrants are protected from being deported, Mayor Adams is now calling for changes to be made to New York’s sanctuary city.

Specifically, he wants migrants who commit felonies to be turned over to ICE for deportation.

During a Town Hall meeting in Brooklyn, NYC Mayor Adams vocalized his shift in tone on sanctuary cities.

What do you think?

Is NYC’s mayor finally waking up to reality?

Recently, Mayor Adams confronted the struggle New York City is facing to house all the migrants moving in, warning that they are “out of room.”

Because of the New York City’s ‘sanctuary city’ policies, Adams has a legal obligation to house each and every migrant that comes in, but he cannot hand over criminals to ICE.

Fox News reported on this:

Mayor Eric Adams stressed with a sense of urgency that New York City has run ‘out of room,’ as the escalating migrant crisis engulfs not only the Big Apple, but other major cities across the U.S.

“Our hearts are endless, but our resources are not,” the NYC mayor recently told Fox Nation. “It’s not like New York is not saying we are not a city of immigrants. We are. We have a rich history of immigrants, but we can’t take the global problem and it become our problem. That is unfair to New Yorkers, and is unfair to migrants.”

Thanks to New York City’s sanctuary city policies, Eric Adams faces a predicament – the city is bursting at the seams and is struggling to find places to house everyone yet – thanks to these policies – he is unable to hand migrants who are repeat offenders over to I.C.E.

Thanks to a “right to shelter” rule enacted in the 1980s, he is also legally required to house everyone.

State of the Union added some more details on the predicament Mayor Adams faces:

While sympathetic to immigrants, Adams said the situation is unfair to city residents.

When asked what actions he can take, Adams cited restrictions from not being able to notify ICE, deport, or stop migrant flows.

“The law states that we cannot notify [Immigration and Customs Enforcement]. I cannot break the law and enforce the law. I can’t deport. I can’t stop people from coming in, repeated criminal behavior, I can’t report to ICE for deportation. So, there’s certain things I can’t do,” Adams said.

A lawsuit was also filed against Adams for not expanding housing vouchers for homeless immigrants as required under a new law, with the mayor claiming the city cannot afford associated reforms.

It turns out that sanctuary cities might not be such a bright idea after all…

Who would have guessed?
