Roy McGrath was the chief of staff to Governor Larry Hogan for a few, short weeks in 2020. …
McGrath is reported to have resigned in the wake of corruption and financial malfeasance allegations that later became the focal point of criminal proceedings.
According to sources, McGrath skipped out on the start of his trial and his failure to appear is what garnered the attention of federal authorities.
The FBI was called in to apprehend McGrath and during the course of that exchange, McGrath sustained a fatal gunshot wound.
It is still unclear as to whether McGrath shot himself, as some suspect, or if an FBI agent is responsible for his death; the agency is still investigating and has not yet made an official statement regarding his exact cause of death.

According to The Hill:
McGrath’s failure to appear for the start of his criminal trial on multiple charges of wire fraud, embezzlement and document falsification had kicked off a manhunt and prompted the FBI and the U.S. Marshals Service to offer up a $20,000 reward for information that could lead to an arrest.

The FBI also fired during the encounter, a law enforcement document says, and it is unclear whether the self-inflicted wound or law enforcement gunfire killed McGrath. ~The Washington Post— Cat, Reigning Typo Queen👑😷🌻NO DMs (@typo_cat) April 4, 2023

Fox News provided this statement from McGrath’s attorney:
“Good evening. The FBI has confirmed that Roy has succumbed to his injuries.
It is unclear to me at this time if the injury was self-inflicted or was as a result of an exchange of gunfire with the FBI,” McGrath’s attorney said.
“It is a tragic ending to the past three weeks of uncertainty. I think it is important for me to stress that Roy never wavered about his innocence.”
