A Democratic governor just went on Newsmax and told his own party something its socialist wing refuses to hear.
Colorado Gov. Jared Polis is not switching parties or endorsing Republicans. He made clear that he remains a proud Democrat.
But when host Bob Brooks asked him on July 23 how Democrats should answer the socialist surge inside their ranks, Polis did not duck.
Trending Politics reported Friday on the remarkable exchange, which aired the previous day during Polis’s appearance with Brooks. Its coverage centered on the unusual sight of a Democratic governor openly warning that an ideology exciting part of his party’s base has a long record of failure.
The interview was not a renunciation of the Democratic Party. Polis called himself a proud Democrat and argued that his party could pursue universal health care and a strong safety net without putting government in control of the economy.
He defined socialism as government or collective ownership of the means of production, then connected that concentration of power to poverty and government control. Brooks later pressed him with specific proposals from the Democratic Socialists of America, turning a broad ideological warning into a direct test of where Polis would draw the line.

The heart of his answer was not subtle. Democrats, he said, need to explain why “socialism has failed” and why concentrating economic and political power in the same hands leads to poverty and government control.
Polis tied that warning to the progressive goals socialists claim to share. In his telling, destroying the prosperity created by free enterprise would move the country further away from those goals, not closer to them.
This was not a Republican making the case on a campaign stage. It was a sitting Democratic governor warning his own party that its socialist turn would move the country further away from the goals many progressives claim to support.
Mediaite published a transcript of the interview showing that Polis paired his warning with a defense of universal health care and a strong social safety net.
His argument was that those programs can only be sustained by capitalism, free markets, economic growth, and prosperity. He pointed to European countries that expanded benefits after moving away from centrally controlled economies and embracing market systems.
That makes his warning harder for the socialist left to wave away because it comes from a Democrat who openly wants universal coverage and a much stronger government-backed safety net. Polis was not arguing against every government benefit.
He was telling Democrats that the wealth needed to fund those benefits does not appear by government decree.
Polis had already drawn the line publicly on July 15, saying he did not want socialists to destroy Colorado:

Brooks then read several planks from the current national platform of the Democratic Socialists of America. The program calls for abolishing the Senate, making the executive and judicial branches subordinate to Congress, abolishing ICE, dismantling the police and prison system, and bringing the largest corporations and essential industries under public ownership.
Polis was careful about what he had personally verified. He said he trusted Brooks’s sourcing but had not reviewed the cited page himself, adding that the website appeared to be down when he tried to pull it up.
He nevertheless answered the proposals as Brooks described them. Polis called public ownership of major industries socialism.
He rejected abolishing the Senate and described some of the constitutional demands as bizarre. Then he warned there is a “fine line between socialism and fascism” because the two can meet at the far end of the spectrum.
Polis’s criticism did not stop with his own party. He also objected to federal corporate ownership under President Trump’s administration, pointing to the government’s positions in Intel and MP Materials.
The corporate arrangements at issue are publicly described by both Intel and MP Materials. Both companies framed the deals as investments in strategic American capacity rather than government management of day-to-day business decisions.
Intel said its 2025 agreement gave the federal government a 9.9 percent passive stake without board representation. The transaction used previously committed grant funding and was presented as a way to advance domestic semiconductor production and national-security priorities.
MP Materials said its Pentagon partnership was designed to strengthen America’s rare-earth supply chain, reduce reliance on foreign sources, and dramatically expand domestic magnet production at scale. The preferred stock and warrant could amount to roughly 15 percent ownership if fully converted and exercised.

Polis still argued that government should not be “both a player and a referee” in the market. That puts him at odds with a piece of the administration’s industrial policy, even as his broader warning lands squarely on the socialist movement gaining influence inside the Democratic Party.
Conservatives will disagree with Polis on plenty. But he said one thing the modern left cannot admit without cracking its entire sales pitch: capitalism creates the prosperity that makes a safety net possible, while socialism puts economic power in the same government hands that already hold political power.
When a Democratic governor is delivering that message on Newsmax, the fight is no longer hiding in the party’s back rooms. It is out in the open, and the socialist wing now has to answer one of its own.
