Hollywood is mourning the death of Sam Neill, a veteran actor most widely associated with his leading role in the 1993 blockbuster “Jurassic Park.”
Although he had battled cancer in recent years, his family confirmed that he was cancer-free at the time of his death.
As Page Six reported:
“It is with immense sadness that the whānau [family] of Sam Neill share the news of his passing on Monday 13th July, in Sydney Australia,” the late actor’s loved ones wrote via Instagram.
ADVERTISEMENT“Sam was surrounded by family and passed with the dignity that has characterized his whole life,” the statement continued. “The loss was sudden and unexpected but blessed by the fact that Sam remained cancer free.”
Neill’s family went on to “express their deepest gratitude to the staff at St Vincent’s Private Hospital for their incredible care.”
They concluded, “More details will be shared later, but for now, on behalf of the family, we ask that you respect their privacy as they navigate this immeasurable loss.”
Neill’s death comes just two months after he announced he was cancer-free following his battle with angioimmunoblastic T-cell lymphoma – a rare and aggressive form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
“I’ve been living with a particular type of lymphoma for about five years and I was on chemotherapy and the pretty miserable business but it was keeping me alive,” he told Australia’s 7News in April.
The news quickly sparked tributes and condolences from fans on social media:
Why is it always bad news and sad day when people die… There aren’t enough great actors to fill people like his shoes

Oh, this one hurts. I’ve been a fan of Neill’s since I saw him in My Brilliant Career. And it’s so great when an actor you like is also a genuinely good person and that was Neill. So I’m going to need some time with this one. #RIPSamNeill

Fox News provided these details:
The “Jurassic Park” actor announced in April he was cancer-free after undergoing treatment for stage-three blood cancer.
“I’ve just had a scan just now and there is no cancer in my body, that’s an extraordinary thing,” Neill said at the time. “I’m very, very excited that this can happen.”
The family said more details would be shared later, but asked that fans respect their privacy as they “navigate this immeasurable loss.”
In addition to his role as Dr. Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park franchise, Neill starred in “The Portable Door,” “The Piano,” “The Hunt for Red October” and “Event Horizon,” among others.
