“Increasingly Concerned” – Kentucky Governor Requests Health Update On Mitch McConnell

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, a Democrat, sent a letter to Sen. Mitch McConnell’s office, requesting an update on the current status of his health.

“Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the current state of your health and wellbeing, and ability to hold office in the United States Senate,” the letter read.

“As Governor, I request that you fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health,” it continued.

“As public officeholders, we have made a commitment to our constituents to do our best to represent them and to always be transparent. I believe this requires clear communication about one’s ability to serve. We wish you a safe and speedy recovery,” it added.

NBC News has more:

Beshear’s letter comes 24 days after the 84-year-old Kentucky Republican was first hospitalized following a medical emergency that his office has declined to elaborate on.

Since then, there has been rampant speculation about McConnell’s condition on both the left and the far right.

NBC News reported last week that paramedics had conducted CPR on an individual experiencing a “cardiac arrest” at a known address for McConnell on June 14, the same day his office disclosed he had been hospitalized. But the office has not provided any information about why he was hospitalized, what his current condition is or when he might return to the Senate.

There are unverified rumors that McConnell is “brain dead” and won’t return to Congress.

Scott Jennings, senior political contributor and conservative commentator for CNN, said on Tuesday that he had a lengthy conversation with McConnell.

“I spoke to my old friend Mitch McConnell this morning, the senior Senator from Kentucky. He’s still recovering in the hospital. We talked for just shy of 20 minutes … about IRAN, UKRAINE, the unfolding situation in MAINE, my visit to the TR Presidential Library, and even a little bit of Senate history,” Jennings said.

“I told him we want to see him back at work as soon as possible,” he added.

However, investigative journalist Laura Loomer claimed the Kentucky Republican is in a vegetative state.

“Believe me when I tell you, Mitch McConnell is a vegetable. Passing the Save America Act and getting Trump’s agenda codified is much easier than covering up for a man who is never going to be the same. Do you know what happens to your brain when you’re found unconscious for a long period of time and you fall and hit your head at 84?” Loomer wrote on Tuesday.

“Show us his brain scan. They never will. We know why. I have enough contacts to know the truth,” she added.

Desirée Townsend, the journalist who first obtained a recording from emergency responders suggesting McConnell was unconscious after suffering a cardiac arrest, said she has “heard the same thing” as Loomer.

“I have heard the same thing from my sources for days. At this point, I am at the hospital for when they eventually decide to move cut him off of life support and move his body. His Capitol police detail is still here as of 3:39pm ET,” Townsend said on Monday.

If a vacancy for the Kentucky Senate seat occurs before August 3, it would trigger a special election to find a replacement.

“Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear has taken the highly unusual step of formally sending a letter to Senator McConnell requesting that he update Kentuckians on his health and ability to continue serving in the United States Senate. When a sitting governor publicly asks one of his own state’s senators to explain whether he is capable of fulfilling his duties, it’s a sign that concerns have grown well beyond social media speculation,” said Kylie Jane Kremer, co-founder of the conservative political advocacy organization ‘Women for America First.’

“It’s also remarkable that a Democratic governor is the one demanding transparency while much of the Republican leadership has relied on brief public statements rather than providing clear, verifiable information that would settle the questions surrounding McConnell’s condition. With the August 3 deadline under Kentucky law rapidly approaching, a date that could affect the process for filling any Senate vacancy, the need for transparency has never been greater. Kentuckians deserve to know whether their senator is able to carry out the responsibilities of the office they elected him to hold,” she continued.

“One question also remains unanswered regarding our national security: where is Elaine Chao and why has she been meeting with the CCP as McConnell is in the hospital?” she questioned.

WLKY explained further:

What would happen if Kentucky suddenly lost a U.S. Senator?

Before 2024, a Kentucky governor could appoint a temporary U.S. senator from a list provided by the departing senator’s political party until a special election was held.

That changed with House Bill 622, which became law in April 2024.

The legislation was sponsored by state Rep. Steven Rudy of Paducah. Former state Rep. Kevin Bratcher, now a Louisville Metro Council member, was one of its co-sponsors.

“We came up with the idea that we’ll just have a special election and let the voters decide,” Bratcher said.

Now, if a U.S. Senate seat becomes vacant, the governor must call a special election. There would be no temporary appointment. Until that election happens, Kentucky would have only one sitting U.S. senator.

If the vacancy happens within 56 days of an election and there is not enough time to hold a special election, the seat would remain vacant until the next regular election.

The next election in Nov. 3. Should something happen to a U.S. senator this year, the cutoff date for special election would be Sept. 8.

Bratcher said if a senator cannot fulfill his or her term and there is not enough time for the governor to set the process in motion, voters would wait until the next regular election.
