Angel Studios’ Patriotic Hit ‘Young Washington’ Already Has A Sequel In The Works

Even as leftists denounced all of the patriotism in the air over the weekend, millions of Americans nevertheless celebrated the incredible milestone of America’s 250th anniversary.

And one popular way to do that involved heading to the cinema to watch the latest live-action film from Angel Studios.

As Deadline reported, “Young Washington” opened to such a strong reception that the studio is already pursuing a sequel:

MONDAY AM: Angel Studios overshot its cannon Sunday when it came to the opening for Young Washington: The opening wasn’t $20.8M, rather $19.3Mafter a lower-than-expected Sunday of $4.1M (versus $5.6M). That’s still a debut to be proud about for the Jon Erwin-directed indie historical epic, ahead of its $15M industry opening forecast.

The revised figure makes Young Washington the second-best 3-day for Angel Studios after Sound of Freedom‘s $19.6M in 2023 and the third-best opening for the values-based distributor after David ($22M last year) and Sound of Freedom. All eyes will be watching how this Wonder Project and 2521 Entertainment project legs out. Sound of Freedom was a huge surprise at the 2023 summer box office, posting a 9.3x multiple of its Friday-Sunday take.

Later in the same article:

Director, producer and co-writer Jon Erwin (I Can Only Imagine) hit social to announce that a Revolutionary War follow-up, 1776, is already in the works.

Young Washington ranks second among all of Angels Studios’ domestic openings, behind only December’s animated title David ($22M).

At a time when few distributors are making movies for the middle of the U.S. post Warner Bros’ 2014 mammoth American Sniper ($350M domestic), indie distributors like Angel Studios are picking up the slack; Sound of Freedom finaled at $184.1M stateside. Young Washington played big in the Mountain, Midwest, Southcentral, and South regions, which combined to drive 67% of the pic’s weekend take. And that’s without premium large-format screens. The top-grossing theater wasn’t the AMC Burbank in LA or AMC Lincoln Center in NYC, which typically is what we see on any big-grossing movie, rather it is The Megaplex 18 Thanksgiving Point in Utah, which has collected $111K to date. On July 4th, Young Washington was No. 2 at the domestic B.O. with $7.6M behind Minions & Monsters‘ $9.4M.

Here’s more from the Post Millennial:

Erwin shared the news in a video filmed at George Washington’s Mount Vernon estate, saying one of the most common questions he has received since the film’s release is whether Washington’s story will continue.

“The answer is yes,” Erwin said. “We are working on another one right now. We have just begun writing another Revolutionary War epic on the year 1776.”

He also said that the next film will be even bigger than the first.

“If you think Washington’s big, wait for 1776. It’s epic in every way. Another incredible chapter in this man’s life and legacy,” he said.
