Gavin Newsom announced on June 15, 2026 that he and his wife are under a federal Department of Justice investigation.
He did not learn it from a leak. He announced it himself, in an X post with video and an official statement from the Governor’s Office.
Newsom claims President Trump personally directed the DOJ to investigate him and First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom.
Newsom made the accusation publicly in his own post:

In his own words, federal agents have already started knocking on doors.
Newsom says agents contacted family friends and former employees, demanded records, and have been digging through years of documents tied to him and his wife.
He also says investigators are using a grand jury process.
The Governor of California posted Newsom’s statement with these details:
In recent days, federal agents have knocked on the doors of family friends and former employees.
Not because they found a crime. Because they are simply trying to find one.
They are demanding records.
They are abusing the grand jury process.
Digging through years and years of random documents.

Someone who has done nothing wrong, other than having the temerity to advocate for what she believes in.
If they can’t intimidate me, they’ll go after the mother of our children.
Donald Trump picked the wrong target. We have nothing to hide.

That is the heart of Newsom’s pitch: no charges, no described crime, just an investigation he wants the public to read as political.
He also tied the timing to his own presidential ambitions.
Strip away the spin and one thing is clear. The sitting governor of California is publicly confirming that federal agents are working a case that involves him and his wife.
The DOJ and the White House did not confirm the investigation in the material available here. The specific allegations Newsom describes were not independently confirmed either.
So what is on the record is Newsom’s account, and Newsom’s account alone.
By his telling, the questions are reaching back years and pulling in people who once worked for him and people close to his family.
That is a serious posture for federal investigators to take. It is not how prosecutors treat a closed file.
Newsom wants the country to see a victim. What he actually announced is that the people around him are now being asked questions under federal authority.
Those two things are not the same, and he chose to broadcast the second one on his own.
