The Republican Party is finding it increasingly difficult to put up a united front as a handful of GOP lawmakers continue placing obstacles along the path to achieving President Donald Trump’s MAGA agenda.
One particularly frustrating friction point for the White House has been inaction regarding the ongoing military operation in Iran.
As The Hill reported, Trump took Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY) to task for recent opposition and bringing up his 2024 decision to step down as the party’s leader in the Senate:
President Trump offered stark criticism of Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Thursday, calling him an “angry man” and launching into his grievances with the former Senate Republican Leader from the Oval Office.
ADVERTISEMENTAsked whether there would be enough support from Republicans in Congress for a supplemental bill to fund the Iran war, Trump said he hoped so.
But when it was pointed out that some Republicans, including McConnell, don’t see the bill’s passage as likely, Trump unleashed a spew of insults against the longest-ever serving Kentucky senator.
“Well, McConnell’s an angry man, and he, you know, got thrown out of his position. He’s an angry guy,” Trump said, referring to McConnell stepping down as Senate Republican Leader in 2024, to be succeeded by Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.).
“He’s an angry man who is very disloyal to John Thune … Mitch McConnell’s a bad guy, and I thought he was lousy at his job.”
But McConnell wasn’t the only Senate Republican Trump called out by name as he seeks to advance a voter ID measure that has become a second-term domestic priority:
CNN’s Manu Raju sparked some conversation with his post highlighting the president’s comments:
You think he "stepped aside", Manu?

As Mediaite reported, Trump is expecting a “no” vote on the SAVE Act from Murkowski, but he has higher hopes for another GOP senator:
And Murkowski is terrible, terrible to us, terrible to the country. Mr. President. And, you know, I almost feel guilty. I’ve probably done more for Alaska than any other state. Not because of her, because it’s the right thing to do. She’s just an impediment. But she’s there. She probably will be a negative vote. You have a couple of others. I think Rand Paul’s come a long way. Let’s see what happens. I think Rand Paul likes “Save America.” Because Rand Paul is usually a negative vote, but I think he likes “Save America.” So that’s good. I like Rand Paul. But, you know, I hope he votes for us. Yeah.
The GOP currently holds a 53-47 majority in the U.S. Senate, which means Trump can only afford to lose four votes to pass his agenda. His attacks on U.S. Senators like Thom Tillis(R-NC), Murkowski, and McConnell, combined with those Senators whose primary opponents he endorsed, Bill Cassidy (R-LA) and John Cornyn (R-TX), means the president has potentially angered more Senators than votes he can afford to lose.
And here’s a clip of Trump’s comments:
