In response to reports of an Iranian attack on an Apache helicopter, President Donald Trump quickly made it clear that the US would not treat the military aggression lightly.
As CNN reported on Tuesday:
President Donald Trump said the US must respond after Iran brought down an Army Apache helicopter, whose crew members were safely rescued.
Trump posted on social media Tuesday afternoon that the US military informed him Iran shot down the helicopter, which was patrolling the Strait of Hormuz, off the coast of Oman.
ADVERTISEMENT“There were two pilots involved, both are safe and uninjured. Nevertheless, the United States must, of necessity, respond to this attack,” he said.
Two US officials said the helicopter was brought down by an Iranian drone. A separate source familiar with the incident said it was an Iranian Shahed drone that struck the US helicopter. One of the US officials said that it was unclear whether the drone had targeted the Apache intentionally or if it was an inadvertent takedown.
Reports then began to surface of retaliatory strikes being carried out against Iranian targets, including this one from Politico:
U.S. forces launched retaliatory strikes Tuesday against Iran following the downing of an Army Apache helicopter near the Strait of Hormuz as President Donald Trump struggles to reach a deal to end the war.
U.S. Central Command disclosed the strikes in a social media post that provided no details on the targets or the extent of the planned operation.
“The mission is a proportional response to unjustified Iranian aggression,” CENTCOM said.
The strikes hit radar and air defense sites in Iran according to a U.S. official, granted anonymity to discuss ongoing operations.
Trump had telegraphed a military response on social media overnight Monday following the news that Iran shot down the U.S. helicopter. Both pilots survived the attack and were recovered.
But hours later, the president cast some doubt on just how proportional this response will actually be.
To make his thinly veiled point, Trump invoked a scene from the first season of the hit dramatic series “The West Wing.”
🇺🇸⚔️🇮🇷Trump shared a clip from the TV series The West Wing on Truth Social.

The Hill provided some additional context about the episode:
The scene features fictional President Josiah Bartlet, played by Martin Sheen, asking Adm. Percy Fitzwallace about the “virtue” of a proportional response after the Syrian government shoots down a U.S. military plane.
After seeing the president grow agitated, Fitzwallace, played by the late John Amos, says the response is not virtuous, “It’s all there is sir.” Bartlet responds that the U.S. should hit back with a “disproportional response” to prevent further aggression.
“Let the word ring forth from this time and this place, gentlemen — you kill an American, any American, we don’t come back with a proportional response,” Sheen’s character continues. “We come back with total disaster!”
The episode concludes with the fictional president going forward with the proportional response after he realizes that the “disproportional response” would result in more civilian deaths.
As for whether Trump ultimately reaches the same conclusion, it remains to be seen. But that uncertainty could be strategic as the president becomes increasingly impatient with the stonewalling of Iranian counterparts:
