Federal Drug Surge Hits San Francisco With 89 Arrests And Major Fentanyl Seizures

For years, San Francisco’s open-air drug markets ran in plain sight while city leaders blamed everything except the dealers selling poison on the streets.

Now federal prosecutors are putting numbers on the table.

On June 5, 2026, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California announced the results of a coordinated drug enforcement surge in the city.

Between early October 2025 and the end of May 2026, federal and local efforts produced roughly 89 arrests, more than 2.2 kilograms of seized fentanyl, more than 840 grams of methamphetamine, and over $38,000 in drug proceeds.

Over that same stretch, the office brought federal criminal charges against more than 40 defendants for drug trafficking in San Francisco.

United States Attorney Craig Missakian did not soften the picture.

He said the city’s open-air drug markets were rending the fabric of San Francisco.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California laid out the scope in its release:

SAN FRANCISCO – The U.S. Attorney’s Office and law enforcement partners announced today the results of a surge in federal drug enforcement measures in San Francisco.

Between early October 2025 to the end of May 2026, coordinated federal and local law enforcement efforts resulted in the seizure of over 2.2 kilograms of fentanyl, over 840 grams of methamphetamine, over $38,000 in drug proceeds, and approximately 89 arrests in San Francisco.

Over the same period, the U.S. Attorney’s Office brought federal criminal charges against more than 40 defendants for drug trafficking in San Francisco.

“There are some problems that cannot be solved alone and this was one of them.

San Francisco’s open-air drug markets were rending the fabric of the city, but working together with our federal, state, and local partners we have made significant progress cleaning up the streets of our great city and we will continue this important work.

We owe the people who live and work here nothing less,” said United States Attorney Craig H. Missakian.

The federal-local partnership is the part that matters here.

DOJ also highlighted the San Francisco surge on X:

Cities like San Francisco have spent years treating fentanyl dealing as a quality-of-life nuisance instead of the killer it is.

This surge changed that posture by putting federal charges behind the arrests.

FBI Special Agent in Charge Scott Schelble said every arrest and seizure represents a meaningful step toward improving the safety and well being of San Francisco residents.

SFPD Chief Derrick Lew put it bluntly. He said selling and using deadly narcotics in San Francisco will never be tolerated.

That is plain language a lot of San Francisco residents have wanted to hear for a long time.

The office also noted the standard legal caveat that complaints, informations, and indictments are allegations only, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Officials say the enforcement work is not finished and more is planned.

For a city that became a national symbol of open drug dealing and overdose deaths, the message is finally changing.

The arrests, charges, and seizures show what happens when law enforcement is allowed to work.
