President Trump Goes Off On ‘Loser’ Republican For Opposing Blanche Nomination

Throughout the current midterm cycle, President Donald Trump has already shown his sway over the GOP by backing mostly successful primary bids against incumbent Republican lawmakers who hadn’t been fully supportive of his MAGA agenda.

This week, he continued to call out those on his own side of the aisle, including Sen. Thom Tillis (R-NC), who made headlines for his comments opposing the nomination of Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche.

The Hill covered Trump’s reaction to the development:

“Sen. Tillis is a loser. He didn’t run because I wouldn’t support him,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One.

“He’s just an angry man because he’s not going to be a senator any longer. He wasn’t respected in the Senate. He fought a lot of people,” he continued. “He was forced to leave the Senate because I wouldn’t support him and he quit, so now he’s trying to make trouble by opposing anyone.” 

Trump went on to praise Blanche, referring to him as “a brilliant guy who everybody likes and everybody respects.” 

Tillis warned this week that he would vote against Blanche if Blanche did not condemn Jan. 6 rioters who beat police officers.

“Senator Tillis is a total loser. That’s why he didn’t even run for re election! He’s just a bitter, angry guy because his time in the Senate is over. He wasn’t respected by anyone there!”

Trump went further: “He attacked so many good people, including Pete Hegseth, who has turned out to be an absolute star.” 

“Tillis is finished. He’s cold and resentful because I wouldn’t back him, so he quit. Now he’s just causing problems and opposing everyone.”

Trump made it clear… Tillis is unqualified, ineffective, and no longer wanted in the Senate.

Politico provided coverage of Tillis’ initial remarks:

Sen. Thom Tillis (R-N.C.) is viewed as the critical vote for Blanche to win over on the Judiciary Committee. Tillis has vowed he won’t support Justice Department nominees who he views as sympathetic those who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, and previously told POLITICO that the Justice Department’s “Anti-Weaponization Fund” would be a factor in whether or not an attorney general nominee is able to be confirmed.

Blanche told House appropriators Tuesday that the Trump administration would not go forward with administering payouts to individuals deemed victims of “lawfare” by the federal government. But the attempt to establish such an account has continued to present a political problem for Republicans, with many seeing Blanche as the face of the effort.

“What we need to do right now is focus on the [Anti-Weaponization] Fund, or he’s not going to have a very good time in Judiciary Committee,” Tillis, who will retire after the end of this year, told reporters when asked about Blanche’s forthcoming nomination. “Just think about what the Democrats would do to him.”

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, another Senate Judiciary Republican, said of Blanche’s chances, “I think it depends on his answers to questions that I intend to ask him at the Judiciary Committee.”
