President Trump Floats 2028 GOP Ticket: ‘Very Unbeatable’

Neither of the two men most often discussed by the current Commander-in-Chief as his possible replacement seem to enjoy having that conversation.

Both dismiss the question as often as possible whenever reporters bring it up.

They joke, or else drop the question all together — usually with a quip about it being too soon to consider it.

But President Trump doesn’t mind bringing up the question one bit!

A 2028 election pitting JD Vance and Marco Rubio opposite each other for a potential Republican nomination has been discussed several times by President Trump.

But more and more, he’s talking in terms of a “dream team”; a combined GOP ticket with Vance and Rubio.

That’s the concept that had President Trump visibly excited during a newly released interview with the New York Post’s ‘Pod Force One’ podcast.

Here’s the clip catching attention with the President openly musing the possibility of an ‘unbeatable’ single 2028 ticket featuring the current VP and Sec. of State:

The President pointed out in that clip that they are ‘both young guys’ with lots of talent.

But even in his own excitement at the prospect of that ‘dream team’ ticket, President Trump reminded the NYP interviewer that there is substantially more than 2 years remaining before that question needs to be answered.

Still, President Trump’s excitement over the possibility of that dynamic duo side-by-side on a 2028 GOP ticket was obvious.

Though… he didn’t say who should be at the TOP of that potential ticket, as was related in this report from The Hill:

President Trump suggested Vice President Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio should run together on a joint Republican ticket in the 2028 presidential election, though he stopped short of saying whom he’d prefer as his successor.

In an episode of The New York Post’s “Pod Force One” released Wednesday, Trump praised both officials when asked who should run.

Early speculation around potential contenders for the Republican nomination once Trump leaves office has surged recently, with Vance and Rubio widely viewed as the frontrunners. Polling from late last month showed Vance and Rubio neck and neck in a hypothetical Republican presidential primary.

The president, in the Wednesday interview, said a ticket featuring the current vice president and secretary of State would be difficult to defeat in the general election.

“I don’t know how you beat them if they’re together,” he said. “That would be a great team.”
Trump added that Vance and Rubio have a strong relationship and share similar qualities.

He said he watches both men closely and studies “them as they’re with each other.”

The polling mentioned in that excerpt from The Hill is still current.

Just one week ago, Emerson College Polling put out their newest numbers on potential 2028 Presidential Primary contenders.

It showed Marco Rubio and JD Vance remaining in a dead heat on the Republican side of things:

Of course, there are always the unconfirmed reports of bitter infighting and backstabbing.

Just another reminder not to believe everything you read on the internet:

Here’s the full text of that post:

JD Vance is reportedly becoming more isolated within Trump’s administration after Tulsi Gabbard resigned.

His non-interventionist stance on Iran has reportedly put him at odds with Trump, while Marco Rubio has gained influence.

Some reports also suggest Vance could skip a 2028 presidential run to avoid being tied to recent controversies.

For all I can tell, there could be some truth in that report credited to the Daily Mail.

But for all I can tell — it could have been completely conjured up out of thin air on the spot to sell ad clicks and propagate the notion that the two could never team up.

What I know for certain is how Rubio and Vance have responded to the 2028 question publicly.

And neither seem to be at the throat of the other — disagreements notwithstanding.

Vance says he likes being VP, and Rubio even went so far as saying he’d support Vance if he runs for the next step up — as reported just today by Time:

“They’re very talented,” Trump said. “And I think the two of them running together as a team would be very unbeatable.”

He also said, though, that “they have to agree to it” and that there was still “a long time left” before the 2028 election. He didn’t specify whether he would like Vance or Rubio to run for the Oval Office.

Vance, who many view as Trump’s successor to lead the MAGA movement, has waved off speculation over his plans for 2028.

“I’m not a potential future candidate,” he told reporters in May. “I’m a Vice President, and I really like my job.”

Rubio, who unsuccessfully ran for the White House in the 2016 election, said in a Vanity Fair story published in December that, if Vance decided to run for President in 2028, he would support the Vice President.

JD Vance and Marco Rubio may both be openly dismissive of the 2028 question.

But President Trump LOVES bringing up the topic, as was related in this report a few weeks ago from the Associated Press:

At a White House event last week with visiting law enforcement officials, Trump polled the audience about whether they’d prefer to see Rubio or Vance as the party’s next presidential nominee.

“Who’s it gonna be? Is it gonna be JD? Is it gonna be somebody else? I don’t know,” Trump said in his remarks.

“Who likes JD Vance?” Trump said, surveying the crowd before asking, “Who likes Marco Rubio?”

Both drew applause, though Vance appeared to get a louder response.

“Sounds like a good ticket,” Trump said, calling them “a dream team.”

I don’t expect Vance or Rubio to suddenly come out swinging at each other for the top slot on the President’s proposed 2028 ticket combo.

But the fact that the President is very willingly and openly discussing the future of the Republican Party is a VERY GOOD SIGN.

No one with two brain cells could ever claim Trump walks around as President without his head in the game.

And the obvious reality that the FUTURE of that very serious ‘game’, after his time in the Oval is through, is STILL something of very consistent importance to him with all that he handles as President on a daily basis — that’s a good thing.

I don’t know if a Vance / Rubio ticket will ever materialize, or if the President’s ‘dream team’ winds up in the trash heap when that election cycle actually kicks off.

But for this Dad of five young kids, looking to the future years in which my kids will grow up…

I really like the possibilities President Trump is painting about what might come next…

And the caliber of individuals that are poised to lead this great nation forward.
