Omar Responds After Mace Questions Her Loyalty, Moves To Limit Congress To Natural-Born Citizens

US Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has faced questions about her allegiances for years, due in large part to her sharp criticism of America and consistent harping on her ties to Somalia.

But she’s not the only sitting member of Congress facing scrutiny from her own colleagues regarding loyalty to the United States.

One Republican legislator recently advanced a proposal that would prevent foreign-born individuals from being elected to Congress, and Omar had a curt reaction when asked about the measure by a Fox News reporter:

“Good luck to her,” Omar told Fox News Digital when asked her opinion on the potential legislation.

Rep. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., announced Wednesday that she is proposing a constitutional amendment that would require any member of Congress, federal judges, or Senate-confirmed officers to be a natural-born citizen. This amendment would impose the same natural-born citizen standard required for presidents and vice presidents in the U.S.

Omar was one of three targets that Mace specifically pointed out when she posted to X on Wednesday to announce her new “long overdue” joint resolution. Omar was born in Somalia and became a naturalized citizen in 2000.

Mace’s proposal might be unlikely to pass, but it did spark significant discussion on social media as well as Capitol Hill:

Here’s what The Hill reported on Mace’s proposal:

The South Carolina Republican, who is running for governor in the Palmetto State, suggested U.S. officials born in other countries could have divided loyalties.

“The people writing America’s laws, confirming America’s judges, and representing America on the world stage should have one loyalty: America,” Mace wrote in her post. “Not any other country.”

“For too long we have allowed foreign born members to hold seats in this government while making clear they are America last, not America first. We see it every day,” she continued. “This constitutional amendment will put an end to it.”

There are 26 foreign-born members of Congress, including 19 Democrats and seven Republicans.
