After Receiving A Nod From President Trump, Paxton Explains Why ‘MAGA Agenda’ Is On The Line

In an election season packed with endorsements, President Donald Trump’s decision to weigh in on the upcoming Texas US Senate primary was particularly impactful.

Coming on the heels of a string of notable wins for candidates with his endorsement, Trump explained why he believes Ken Paxton deserves the seat more than incumbent Republican Sen. John Cornyn.

And shortly thereafter, Paxton appeared on Fox News Channel’s “The Ingraham Angle” to explain why he believes the future of Trump’s agenda hangs in the balance depending on the outcome of this race.

Here’s what Breitbart reported:

Paxton replied, “Well, first of all, I was glad that I got to announce my candidacy against John Cornyn on your show April 8 of last year, and I’m finishing my campaign pretty much on your show again. And it’s been — it’s been a great 14 months where I’ve gotten to speak to the voters and ask them one question. John Cornyn is running for his fifth term for U.S. Senate. Nobody has done that in Texas history. He’s been in office since I was in college, and I’m 63. And I’ve asked every voter that I’ve met, whether it’s one or thousands, can you name one great accomplishment of John Cornyn? And the answer, there has never been an answer. And that’s part of the problem. He doesn’t deliver results for Texas. The MAGA agenda is dead under John Cornyn. He kills it every time, just like the Republican Senate that he’s part of. That’s what they’re doing. They’re killing it.”

Cornyn had been long been unpopular among many Trump-supporting Republicans, and the president’s endorsement of his rival only amplified the criticism:

Meanwhile, The Hill reports that Democrats are using the endorsement to help guide their campaign of far-left general-election challenger James Talarico:

“Making an endorsement here after early voting has already started is going to make half of the Republicans in Texas angry, and if they’re already disposed to not want to support Ken Paxton … I think you’re going to see that at the election in November,” said Jon Mark Hogg, who co-founded the 134 PAC, a political group aimed at organizing and supporting rural Democratic parties in the state.

“I’m not saying that they’ll vote for Mr. Talarico, but they may stay home,” Hogg said, calling it “as good as a vote for James Talarico.”

Trump delivered an unlikely but welcome gift to Democrats by endorsing the embattled top prosecutor in Texas for Cornyn’s seat after months of teasing a potential announcement. Early voting began Monday, meaning some voters already cast their ballots when Trump declared his backing.
