Here’s Why Alveda King Just Compared President Trump To Her Uncle MLK Jr.

His complicated personal life notwithstanding, few self-proclaimed men of God have made a bigger impact on the nation than the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

And while many others in the civil rights movement have been compared to him over the decades since he was assassinated, King’s niece thinks there’s someone else who shares some of her uncle’s positive attributes.

Alveda King shared her remarks in an interview conducted during this weekend’s Rededicate 250 event in DC, as Fox News reported:

“This nation was founded on godly principles,” Alveda King said, adding that her uncle, Martin Luther King Jr., “spoke to a crowd like this in 1963.”

Alveda King said her uncle would remind Americans that “we are one blood” and that people of all races “can learn to live together as brothers and sisters.”

She also pushed back on the idea of a strict separation between church and state.

“It’s never a good idea to try to leave God out of anything,” Alveda King said.

She added, “It’s time for us all to repent, to go to God and say we got it wrong, help us get it right, and begin to see each other.”

Hers was just one of many voices throughout the event that aimed to bring glory to God as part of the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration:

Organizers said they expected tens of thousands of attendees at the daylong prayer gathering, which features religious leaders and political figures, including President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to address the crowd by video. The event is billed as a rededication to the principle of “one nation under God.”

“It’s going to be amazing, because it’s going to go from dawn to dusk,” Keith Krach, CEO of Freedom 250, said. “It’s going to have some of the nation’s greatest faith leaders, incredible music and some Cabinet members. It’s a national day of prayer, praise and thanksgiving and recommitment to ‘one nation under God.’”

Three key themes of the event

Organizers outlined three themes for the gathering. 

The first, “The Miracles That Made Us,” focuses on the role of faith over the past 250 years.

The second, “The Miracles Still in Our Midst,” highlights personal testimonies of faith.

The third is “A New Birth of Faith and Freedom.” Officials say this pillar will be an expression of gratitude for the last 250 years and a moment of rededication, asking for God’s blessing, guidance and grace for the next 250 years.
