WATCH: ‘Disappointed’ President Trump Just Called Out A Few ‘Foolish’ Republicans For Protecting The Filibuster

The current Congress hasn’t gotten a lot done thus far in President Trump’s second term, but that’s through no fault of the commander-in-chief.

Trump has repeatedly called on GOP lawmakers to take various steps that would put them in a better strategic position to use their dual-chamber majority to advance his MAGA agenda.

Instead, senior figures like Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) have stood in his way.

And the president recently used his bully pulpit to call out what he described as disappointing behavior by Thune and a handful of other Republicans on Capitol Hill, as the Daily Caller reported:

Trump told the Daily Caller he was “disappointed” in Thune after repeatedly calling on the senator to eliminate the filibuster, enabling Republicans to pass their agenda with a simple majority instead of with the usual 60-vote threshold. Trump also criticized institutionalists like Thune for protecting the filibuster, noting that Democrats will likely terminate it the first chance they get.

Although Thune is the GOP leader in the Senate, Trump also pointed the finger at “a couple of Republicans” who have stood in the way of eliminating the filibuster.

“I’m disappointed,” Trump told the Caller. “I like John a lot, but he has a couple of Republicans that are foolish people. A couple of them I like, a couple of them I can’t stand, actually, if you want to know the truth.”

Trump expressed frustration with these senators, whose names he withheld, arguing that they are actively working against the MAGA agenda.

“Although I am at, according to CNN, 100 percent approval within the Republican party…” Trump told the Caller. “We should have the SAVE America Act. We should have voter identification, voter ID. We should have proof of citizenship. We should have mail-in-voting for the military and people that need it, but not for everybody because every time you have mail-in-voting, you have to cheat.”

“We shouldn’t allow them to cheat,” Trump added. “And we should terminate the filibuster because if [Democrats] get the chance, they’ll do it in the first hour back.”

Clearly, Trump sees the SAVE America Act as an integral piece of legislation in the effort to protect the integrity of future elections.

And social media users prove he’s not alone:

Writing for Fox News, David Marcus took Thune to task for his actions:

Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D., much like his mentor and predecessor, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., is a creature of that austere and august upper body of Congress who has completely forgotten his duty to Republican voters.

It’s simple math. The Senate issue that the GOP electorate cares most about is passing the Save America Act, with its voter ID requirements and other election security measures, even if it means blowing up the filibuster.

But GOP leadership insists that ending the 60-vote threshold and pushing this hyper-popular legislation through is simply impossible.

Thune’s dilemma is whether his duty in this situation is to the institution of the Senate, whose rules and customs he seeks to preserve, or to the 95% of Republican voters shouting from the mountaintop to just pass the bill.

It is important to recognize in this debate that “Senate Majority Leader” is not a constitutional position. Thune isn’t president of the Senate, Vice President JD Vance is. Thune is quite literally a party boss.

Except he refuses to boss his party.
