Ron DeSantis Considering Another Presidential Run?

DeSantis lost badly in the Republican primary two years ago to Trump. He invested heavily in Iowa, the home of the first contest in the GOP race, but few high-profile party members campaigned for him and he took home 21% of the vote. He dropped out of the race prior to the primary in New Hampshire.

One of DeSantis’ few allies during that campaign, Republican Sen. Chip Roy from Texas, told the Times/Herald in 2024 after Desantis’ primary race ended that he was well-liked among voters, but couldn’t overcome the popularity of Trump. Roy spent a month on the campaign trail with DeSantis, mostly in Iowa.

Similarly, DeSantis told Hannity his previous bid for president wasn’t bad, just ill-timed.

“In Iowa, the people that voted for Trump, if he wasn’t running, I would have gotten like 90% of those people,” DeSantis said. “They were conservative voters.”

Since the COVID-19 pandemic, DeSantis has successfully branded himself as a conservative fighter. His message attracted conservative voters from other parts of the country that were locked down in an effort to curb the spread of the disease, while DeSantis reopened Florida. That helped turn Florida — once the country’s largest swing state — solidly red.

DeSantis said the Iowa voters “didn’t want the non-conservative,” the outlet noted.

“They wanted me,” DeSantis continued.

“But the timing didn’t work out, obviously, for that. So, you just got to see what happens,” he added.

DeSantis, who is term-limited, will complete his final term as Florida governor in January 2027.

The Florida governor is currently polling behind Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a hypothetical 2028 GOP primary.

According to a Daily Mail/JL Partners poll, Vice President JD Vance leads the field of potential GOP nominees for 2028 with 53% support from Republicans.

Rubio follows in second place at 14% and DeSantis comes in third at 7%.

Florida Politics shared input from one House Republican in the Sunshine State:

U.S. Rep. Anna Paulina Luna knows who she wants to be running mates to succeed President Donald Trump … but she’s unwilling to commit to who should lead the ticket, including Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The Republican joked to interviewer Bill Maher that being asked who should be the presidential nominee was a “dirty question” before saying the two would have to “battle it out.”

Regardless of which political titan prevails, Luna likes what they bring to the table.

“I think that Secretary Rubio has done a phenomenal job in foreign policy. He really has. He was the only Cabinet appointee that was actually unanimously voted into the position and he also has, I think, one of the higher approval ratings currently. And so he’s done great. But JD is also someone that I campaigned with, actually, in California during the Presidential Primary. And someone that I think has the ability to connect with people on a level. You know his story, Hillbilly Elegy. He is the type of person that did come from a normal upbringing. We need more of that in Washington, D.C.”
