Israel Strikes Building Where Iranian Officials Were Gathering To Select New Leader

Iran continues to be leaderless after Israel’s latest move.

Just days after the U.S. and Israel joint air strikes took out most of Iran’s leadership, which included Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Israel has conducted a new strike at an assembly where Iranian officials were gathering to elect a new leader.

Fox News provided further context on the move by Israel:

Israeli forces struck an Iranian Supreme Council gathering on Tuesday as the group was meeting to choose a successor to the late Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, a senior Israeli official told Fox News.

Fox News’ Trey Yingst reported the update on live on Fox on Tuesday morning, saying the move “speaks to the Israeli intelligence about this war.”

“They just targeted the meeting in Tehran where what’s left of the leadership was gathering to choose a new Supreme Leader,” Yingst said.

The U.S. and Israel killed 49 of Iran’s most senior leaders in the opening salvo of Operation Epic Fury on Saturday morning, leaving Iran’s military fractured and leaderless.

President Trump, on Monday, was asked who the current leader of Iran is, and his response was hilarious.

A reporter asked Trump: “Who takes over now that the supreme leader is dead?”

President Trump responded, “I don’t know. I guess the position’s open. I’m creating jobs in Iran, too.”

The New York Post described the process of how the Iranian regime will select a new leader:

Iran’s leadership was plunged into chaos following Khamenei’s death on Saturday, with the country’s constitution tasking the Assembly of Experts to name a new successor.

While there is no strict deadline for a successor to be chosen, the Iranian constitution dictates that the assembly act in the shortest time possible.

The clerical body, however, could opt to delay naming a successor out of fears that he will be immediately targeted by the US and Israel, officials told Reuters.

The Assembly of Experts, itself, is made up of publicly elected clerics who have been vetted by Iran’s Guardian Council.
