Tim Walz Makes Shocking Announcement On Political Future

Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said on Wednesday that he will never seek another elected office in his lifetime.

“I will never run for an elected office again. Never again,” Walz said during an interview with MS NOW.

The announcement from the 2024 Democratic vice presidential nominee follows him ending his re-election bid for governor.

Walz’s earlier announcement that he would not seek a third term as governor came amid heightened scrutiny of Minnesota’s handling of alleged child care fraud. It also came months after Walz said he wanted to run again.

The surprise news fueled speculation about his plans after he left office.

About 18 months earlier, Walz was thrust into the national spotlight when Vice President Kamala Harris picked him as her running mate in the 2024 election. Walz had repeatedly said — even before 2024 — that he was considering a future presidential bid, but he had said he would rule out a 2028 run if he sought re-election as governor.

In forgoing another campaign for governor, Walz, a frequent target of President Donald Trump, cited what he called “political gamesmanship” by Republicans.

“For the last several years, an organized group of criminals have sought to take advantage of our state’s generosity. And even as we make progress in the fight against the fraudsters, we now see an organized group of political actors seeking to take advantage of the crisis,” Walz said in a lengthy statement earlier this month.

“I won’t mince words here. Donald Trump and his allies – in Washington, in Saint Paul, and online – want to make our state a colder, meaner place. They want to poison our people against each other by attacking our neighbors. And, ultimately, they want to take away much of what makes Minnesota the best place in America to raise a family. They’ve already begun by taking our tax dollars that were meant to help families afford child care. And they have no intention of stopping there,” he continued.

The withdrawal came amid scrutiny and criticism over a series of fraud cases involving Minnesota's welfare programs.

There have been years of investigation that began with a $300 million pandemic fraud case involving the nonprofit Feeding Our Future.

Prosecutors said it was the country's largest COVID-19-related fraud scam, and that defendants exploited a state-run, federally funded program intended to provide food for children. So far, 57 people have been convicted, either from pleading guilty or losing at trial. Most of the defendants are of Somali descent.

A federal prosecutor said in December that more than half of the roughly $18 billion in federal funds that supported 14 programs in Minnesota since 2018 may have been stolen. Other fraud allegations are being investigated, including new allegations focused on child care centers.
