BREAKING: Officer Down Near U.S. Capitol on I-695


This is a developing story.

A police officer is down after being reportedly struck by a vehicle on the I-695, near the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The apparent crash sparked a massive response by the D.C. police and National Guard rushing to the scene.

Reporter Nick Sortor was there during the incident.

According to Sortor, the officer was trying to help a motorist when he was hit by another vehicle.

Right now, police are investigating the incident as a major crash, and the officer has been taken to a hospital.

The driver was also injured but remained on the scene.

DC Police are investigating a major crash.

The crash occurred on Tuesday, just after 10 p.m. DC Police are reporting an officer was struck by a vehicle in the eastbound lanes of I-695 just past the 3rd Street Tunnel.

The officer has been taken to a local hospital. The driver of the car remained on the scene.

The officer’s current condition is unknown. Information regarding their identity has not been released at this time.

As a result of the investigation, all eastbound lanes of the highway are closed:
