Border Czar Tom Homan Rebukes The Catholic Church

Border czar Tom Homan has pushed back against the Catholic Church’s stance on the Trump admin’s mass deportations efforts.

On Wednesday the U.S. Conference of Bishops unanimously decided the Trump administration’s mass deportations efforts are indiscriminate.

Homan in response to the Bishop’s stance shared that the “Catholic Church is wrong.”

Border czar Tom Homan rebuked the Conference of Bishops on Friday for condemning mass deportation efforts in the United States led by the Trump administration.

“The Catholic Church is wrong,” Homan told reporters at the White House.

“I’m a lifelong Catholic, but I’m saying it not only as a border czar, but I’m also saying this as a Catholic,” he added.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Conference of Bishops issued a statement rebuking the administration’s “indiscriminate” efforts to remove immigrants.

“We are disturbed when we see among our people a climate of fear and anxiety around questions of profiling and immigration enforcement,” the statement reads. “We are saddened by the state of contemporary debate and the vilification of immigrants.”

Their message came after Pope Leo XIV directed bishops in the U.S. to speak openly about their concerns over President Trump’s mass deportation agenda.

However, Homan said the administration’s goal remains firmly cemented.

“A secure border saves lives. We’re going to enforce the law and by doing that we save a lot of lives,” Homan said Friday. “ICE [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] is sending a message to the whole world.”

The U.S. House Committee on Homeland Security and Subcommittee on Oversight, Investigations, and Accountability have announced the launch of an investigation into more than 200 nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), including two major Catholic nonprofits, that provided taxpayer-funded services to migrants during the Biden administration.

Catholic Charities USA and the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) are among those named in the investigation. According to a June 11 press release, the probe will investigate whether the NGOs “used taxpayer dollars to facilitate illegal activity” by migrants who entered the U.S. during the Biden administration.

All the NGOs named in the investigation have been sent a letter requesting that they fill out a survey. The letter also expresses concern that some of the NGOs continue to actively advise “illegal aliens on how to avoid and impede law enforcement officials, which can only be seen as an attempt to undermine the work of the federal government.”

“The chairmen request each NGO complete a survey that includes questions on the government grants, contracts, and disbursements they have received; any lawsuits against the U.S. federal government they are petitioning; amicus briefs they have filed in any lawsuit brought against the U.S. federal government; any legal service, translation service, transportation, housing, sheltering, or any other form of assistance provided to illegal immigrants or unaccompanied alien children since January 2021; and more,” the press release stated.
