In a clip, Mamdani detailed plans to enact rent freezes and huge fines on landlords in order to declare them unfit.
Then, Mamdani says the city will seize the privately-owned property and take it over.

In other words, Mamdani plans to impose literal communism.
He’s not even trying to hide it.
Communism, but make it rent-controlled.

Too bad, in history, this never happened before so we can see the result a few years later…

By the way, such a move is highly illegal and unconstitutional, under the Fifth Amendment.
Grok said:
Yes, such a scheme would likely violate the Fifth Amendment’s Takings Clause, which requires just compensation for government seizure of private property. NYC can enforce housing codes, impose fines, and lien buildings for unpaid repairs under existing laws, but transferring ownership without fair market value payment amounts to unconstitutional confiscation. Courts, including in cases like Kelo v. New London, demand compensation even for public use; pure regulatory overreach without it fails scrutiny. Landlords could challenge it successfully.

New Yorkers, this is what you voted for…
Such a shame.
