Fox News reported more on the ingredient upgrade from Doritos and Cheetos:

One of America’s favorite snacks, Doritos, along with Cheetos, will be getting a recipe change.

Doritos, owned by PepsiCo, will no longer be made with artificial flavors or colors.

PepsiCo will be removing artificial flavors and colors from its products, the company announced in its third-quarter earnings remarks this week.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) announced in April that it would be working with industry leaders to eliminate petroleum-based dyes from the food supply by the end of next year.

Among the dyes HHS is looking to get rid of are Red 40, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6.

Doritos Nacho Cheese has all three of those artificial colors, while Cheetos contains Yellow 6.

Petroleum-based synthetic dyes are used to add color to food and drug items.

Board-certified and licensed dietitian nutritionist Kendall Mackintosh told Fox News Digital these additives have been linked to hyperactivity, inflammation and oxidative stress.

A review of 27 clinical trials found that about 64% of studies showed some evidence of behavioral issues in children linked to consuming artificial dyes, according to the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment.

The FDA released the following press release on its goals to eliminate petroleum-based synthetic dyes from American’s food supply:

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) today announced a series of new measures to phase out all petroleum-based synthetic dyes from the nation’s food supply—a significant milestone in the administration’s broader initiative to Make America Healthy Again.

The FDA is taking the following actions:

Establishing a national standard and timeline for the food industry to transition from petrochemical-based dyes to natural alternatives.

Initiating the process to revoke authorization for two synthetic food colorings—Citrus Red No. 2 and Orange B—within the coming months.

Working with industry to eliminate six remaining synthetic dyes—FD&C Green No. 3, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 5, FD&C Yellow No. 6, FD&C Blue No. 1, and FD&C Blue No. 2—from the food supply by the end of next year.

Authorizing four new natural color additives in the coming weeks, while also accelerating the review and approval of others.

Partnering with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to conduct comprehensive research on how food additives impact children’s health and development.

Requesting food companies to remove FD&C Red No. 3 sooner than the 2027-2028 deadline previously required.
“For too long, some food producers have been feeding Americans petroleum-based chemicals without their knowledge or consent,” said HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.

“These poisonous compounds offer no nutritional benefit and pose real, measurable dangers to our children’s health and development. That era is coming to an end. We’re restoring gold-standard science, applying common sense, and beginning to earn back the public’s trust. And we’re doing it by working with industry to get these toxic dyes out of the foods our families eat every day.”
