Democrat Governor Says “We’re Suing Donald Trump” For Alleged National Guard Deployment

California Gov. Gavin Newsom said “we’re suing Donald Trump” for allegedly deploying the California National Guard to Oregon.

“We’re suing Donald Trump. His deployment of the California National Guard to Oregon isn’t about crime,” Newsom wrote on social media.

“It’s about power. He is using our military as political pawns to build up his own ego. It’s appalling. It’s un-American. And it must stop,” he added.

A press release from Newsom’s office claimed the Trump administration deployed 300 California National Guard personnel to Portland, Oregon.

“In response to a federal court order that blocked his attempt to federalize the Oregon National Guard, President Trump is deploying 300 California National Guard personnel into Oregon. They are on their way there now. This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power. The Trump Administration is unapologetically attacking the rule of law itself and putting into action their dangerous words — ignoring court orders and treating judges, even those appointed by the President himself, as political opponents,” Newsom said.

“President Trump exercised his lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel in Portland following violent riots and attacks on law enforcement,” White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson said in a statement emailed to Axios.

Despite a federal court order finding no legal basis to deploy state National Guard troops to the streets of Portland and ordering that control of the Oregon National Guard be returned to state command, the Trump Administration is now sending 300 federally controlled members of the California National Guard to Portland to take their place. The troops had originally been federalized months ago in response to unrest in Los Angeles — conditions that never necessitated their deployment in the first place, and have long since subsided anyway.

U.S. District Judge Karin J. Immergut issued a temporary restraining order on the deployment of 200 National Guard troops to Portland.

The order expires on October 18th but could be extended.

The ruling is not the final say, but Immergut wrote that the plaintiffs showed a likelihood of success on the merits, justifying a temporary restraining order. It blocks the implementation of a Sept. 28 memo ordering the federalization and deployment of the Oregon National Guard.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said Saturday that “justice has been served, and the truth has prevailed.”

“There is no insurrection in Portland. No threat to national security. No fires, no bombs, no fatalities due to civil unrest. The only threat we face is to our democracy — and it is being led by President Donald Trump,” she said in a statement.

The Trump administration has appealed the ruling to the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

Earlier, a White House spokesperson suggested an appeal was possible.

“President Trump exercised his lawful authority to protect federal assets and personnel in Portland following violent riots and attacks on law enforcement — we expect to be vindicated by a higher court,” spokesperson Abigail Jackson said.
