A city in Michigan has become the first police department in the United States to put Arabic on its police patches.

The Dearborn Heights Police Department has revealed its news patches have the words “Dearborn Heights Police” in both English and Arabic

The Dearborn Heights Police Department is unveiling a new officer-designed police patch that will be the first one in the country to feature Arabic.

Police confirmed to FOX 2 on Wednesday that the department has a new optional patch that officers can wear as part of their uniform.

The patch includes the Michigan seal in the center with the words ‘Dearborn Heights Police’ written in both English and Arabic.

According to police, the patch was created by Officer Ermily Murdoc, who designed it to reflect and honor the diversity of our community.

Dearborn Heights’ Middle Eastern or North African population was 39% as of 2023. Neighboring Dearborn has a population of roughly 55%.

“We are proud of Officer Murdoch’s creativity and dedication in helping our department better represent the people we serve,” the department wrote on Facebook. “Our officers proudly serve all members of our community, and this new design is another way we continue to celebrate the rich cultures that make our city unique.”

The police department disabled comments on the Facebook post for the public.

Dearborn is the only city in the United States that has a majority of Muslims.

The Detroit News reported that President Trump won the majority of votes in Dearborn in the 2024 election:

Republican Donald Trump won the presidential vote in the cities of Dearborn and Dearborn Heights in Tuesday’s election on his way to winning Michigan after the former president courted voters in Metro Detroit’s traditionally Democratic Arab American and Muslim communities.

Trump won Dearborn, the nation’s largest Arab-majority city, 42.5%-36% over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, or a margin of more than 6 percentage points. Green Party nominee Jill Stein, who selected a Muslim American running mate, pulled over 18% of the vote in Dearborn, according to the city’s unofficial results.

Those community members who did not support Trump linked the former president’s reelection to a “failure of Democratic leadership” that stopped listening to the community’s concerns that go beyond the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.
