Multiple House Republicans Help Defeat Measure To Censure Controversial Democrat Congresswoman

Five House Republicans helped defeat a measure to censure Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-NJ) and remove her from a committee assignment after her confrontation with ICE officers.

According to Breitbart, the Republicans who voted with Democrats to table the censure include:

  • Rep. Don Bacon (Nebraska)
  • Rep. Mike Flood (Nebraska)
  • Rep. Dave Joyce (Ohio)
  • Rep. Michael Turner (Ohio)
  • Rep. David Valadao (California)

Reps. Andrew Garbarino (New York) and Nathaniel Moran (Texas) voted present.

NBC News has more:

Rep. Clay Higgins, R-La., had introduced the resolution Tuesday night as a privileged matter, the fast-track process that forces a vote within two legislative days. This was his second attempt, as he had also introduced the resolution before the August recess.

McIver lashed out at Higgins after he threatened the vote, saying in a statement, “We were all elected to do the people’s work. I take that responsibility seriously — Clay Higgins clearly does not.”

“Instead of making life any better for the people he represents, he’s seeking to punish me for doing what he and his caucus are too cowardly to do: conduct real oversight, stand up to this administration, and do our jobs,” she added. “If House Republicans think they can make me run scared, they’re wrong.”

On May 9, McIver joined fellow New Jersey Democrats, including Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez, in trying to enter U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark. During the chaotic encounter, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka was arrested on trespassing charges, which were later dropped. McIver told reporters afterward, “We were assaulted by multiple ICE agents.”

Later that month, the Department of Justice charged McIver with two counts of assaulting, resisting, and impeding law enforcement officials in connection with the incident. In June, a federal grand jury indicted McIver on three counts of “forcibly impeding and interfering with federal law enforcement officers.” The congresswoman pleaded not guilty.

The House voted 215-207 to kill the censure resolution.

The measure alleged that McIver’s actions “do not reflect creditably on the House.”

Democrats erupted as the resolution was read on the House floor.

Axios noted:

Several of the Republican members who voted to table or voted “present” are members of the House Ethics Committee, including Reps. Dave Joyce (R-Ohio) and Andrew Garbarino (R-N.Y.).

The panel is currently investigating McIver — a move it is required to take whenever a House member is indicted.

Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) told Axios he voted with Democrats to table the measure because “I think best to let Ethics Committee finish its report.”

The charges and the censure attempt stem from an incident in which McIver and several Democratic colleagues clashed with ICE officers outside the Delany Hall detention facility in Newark.

The lawmakers attempted to perform an oversight visit of the privately operated migrant detention center, but were initially denied access.

Federal prosecutors have alleged that McIver elbowed an officer as law enforcement moved to arrest Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, but McIver has said she was the one who was assaulted in the scuffle.
