Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp responded to the shooting, releasing this statement:

Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians. Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are.

Marty, the girls, and I are thankful for all those who answer the call to serve and who protect their fellow Georgians. We ask that you join us in holding them in our prayers, along with those harmed this evening near the CDC Center.

The suspect allegedly got into a shootout with police and was taken out.

He was found deceased behind a nearby CVS.

NBC News confirmed that the shooter is dead:

A suspect in the active shooter situation on Emory University’s Atlanta campus is dead, according to the Atlanta Police Department.

Police said there was a single shooter who is now dead, and there is no further threat to the campus or surrounding area.

One law enforcement officer was injured in the “course of the response,” police said. It was not clear whether the officer was shot or what injuries they sustained.

Notably, the shooting took place near the CDC in Atlanta, which was struck by stray gunfire.

Bullet-holes could be seen in one of the windows of the CDC building.

Gunfire hit the CDC this afternoon, leaving bullet holes in a workspace window and damage visible inside the building.

Investigators believe shots may have been fired from the sidewalk near the CVS, though the exact shooter position remains unconfirmed.

A DeKalb County police car parked down the hill was also torn by bullets, in a direction different from the CDC.

The conflicting angles highlight how chaotic the scene became as officers worked to track the shooter’s movements and secure the area.

At this time, we don’t know the suspect’s identity or motive.
