Now, New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham has declared a state of emergency for Ruidoso.

CBS 4 Local had more details to report on Grisham’s order:

The governor of New Mexico has signed an emergency declaration asking for help from the federal government as Ruidoso deals with flooding.

On Tuesday night, NM Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham released a statement announcing she has mobilized all state resources and is now asking for federal resources.

Lujan Grisham said Ruidoso needs the same urgent response that Texas received after the flooding disaster.

Below is her full statement:

“Ruidoso endured devastating wildfires and flooding last summer, and now catastrophic flooding is hitting this resilient community again. This crisis demands immediate action.

Tonight, I signed an emergency declaration request to get federal response teams and repair resources on the ground immediately. We’re encouraged that additional federal resources are already on the way.

New Mexico is mobilizing every resource we have, but Ruidoso needs federal support to recover from this disaster. We’ve watched Texas receive the federal resources they desperately needed, and Ruidoso deserves that same urgent response.”

People had these details to report on the flood:

A flash flood overtook a village in New Mexico on Tuesday, prompting an emergency declaration.

The National Weather Service in Albuquerque issued a flash flood emergency advisory for the Ruidoso area on Tuesday, July 8.

“Significant rainfall and water/debris flow is occurring! This is a life-threatening situation, move to higher ground immediately!” NWS Albuquerque said on X.

Minutes later, the agency reiterated in a separate post on X that a “dangerous situation” was unfolding in Ruidoso, and asked residents not to drive through floodwaters, warning them that their vehicles would be carried away.

Two hours later, NWS Albuquerque advised that Rio Ruidoso at Hollywood, N.M., had reached a provisional crest of 20.24 feet while the flash flooding was occurring.

“If this is confirmed, it would be a record high crest (compared to last year’s crest of 15.86 feet on July 20th),” said the agency on X.

According to KOB 4, the village has been dealing with repeated flooding issues since being hit with wildfires last year.

Danielle Silva of the New Mexico Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management told the Associated Press that emergency crews carried out at least 85 swift-water rescues in the area. The rescues included individuals trapped in their homes and cars.
