Major Automaker Just Issued Recalls On Nearly Half A Million Vehicles

A widespread recall is impacting motorists across the US and beyond.

According to recent reports, Nissan — and its luxury subsidiary brand Infiniti — are warning owners of certain vehicles that a faulty component could lead to serious engine problems.

Fox Business reported that a total of around 443,900 automobiles are being recalled as a result:

Engine bearings within the recalled 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue, 2019-2020 Nissan Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles might have a “manufacturing defect” that could “cause engine damage and potentially lead to engine failure,” according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recall report.

The recall report noted the issue was “specific” to vehicles from those models featuring a 3-cylinder 1.5-liter or 4-cylinder 2.0-liter variable compression turbo engine.

Owners may encounter an “abnormal noise” from the engine compartment, rough running, malfunction indicator lights or instrument cluster warning messages if their vehicle is experiencing problems with its bearings, according to the recall report.

Over 37,800 model year 2021-2024 Nissan Rogue, 2019-2020 Nissan Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50 and 2022 Infiniti QX55 vehicles are also under recall in Canada for the same engine-related issue, according to Nissan.

The alert fueled a flurry of social media reactions on Thursday, including many that believe this could be the final blow to the beleaguered Japanese automaker:

AP News provided some additional details about what owners of the impacted models can expect:

As a remedy, the NHSTA’s recall report notes, Nissan and Infiniti dealers will inspect the engine pan of these-now recalled cars — and repair or replace the engine if necessary. The recall covers vehicles with either 3-cylinder 1.5L or 4-cylinder 2.0L VC-Turbo engines. Potential repairs — which will be performed free of charge — will depend on the engine and whether or not debris is detected during the inspection.

In an emailed statement, Nissan said it initiated this recall as part of its “ongoing commitment to customer safety.” And in late August, the company added, notification letters will be mailed out to affected owners “with instructions to bring their vehicle to a Nissan dealer or INFINITI retailer for inspection and repair if necessary.”

In the meantime, drivers can also confirm if their specific vehicle is included in this recall and find more information using the NHTSA site or Nissan’s recall lookup.

Here’s a flashback to an even wider recall the automaker announced a couple of years ago:
