The governor of the Mexican state of Baja California says the United States has withdrawn tourist visas from her and her husband.

Marina del Pilar Ávila, of the ruling Morena party, posted on social media on Sunday that she and her husband had been notified of the consular measure, without specifying the reason for the Trump administration’s decision.

”I fully trust that the situation will be satisfactorily clarified for both of us,” Ávila said on X.

The Baja California press office confirmed to CNN that Ávila’s visa had been withdrawn.

A spokesperson for the US Embassy told The Associated Press that visa records are confidential and that the details of individual cases cannot be discussed.

The governor’s husband, Carlos Torres, a politician and active member of the Morena party, said the visa revocation “does not represent an accusation, investigation, or formal indictment by any authority, neither in Mexico nor in the United States.”

He said in a post on Facebook on Saturday that his “conscience is clear.”

MEXICO: U.S. Revokes Visas of Baja California Governor and Husband; Bank Accounts Cancelled

The U.S. revoked the visas of Baja California Governor Marina del Pilar Ávila Olmeda and her husband, Carlos Torres, following notifications from Wells Fargo and Bank of America about the cancellation of their accounts due to concerns over the illicit origins of their funds.

Carlos Torres, a former Mexican congressman, has been linked to fentanyl trafficking in Baja California, a region heavily impacted by the Sinaloa Cartel’s operations.

Marina del Pilar, the first female governor of Baja California and a MORENA party member, has faced prior political scrutiny for gender-based attacks during her career, but this visa revocation marks a significant escalation, potentially tied to broader U.S. efforts to curb narco-trafficking across the border.

Like most Mexicans with visas, Marina del Pilar has two anchor babies. Her daughter and son were born in Brawley, California.

Governor Marina Del Pilar Ávila Olmeda announced on her official accounts on Facebook and X late Saturday night that her husband’s visa was revoked first, and “…shortly after the consular measure was applied, I received a similar notification.”

Both Ávila Olmeda and her husband are members of the ruling Morena party.

Ávila Olmeda’s post did not mention if she was given a reason for the revocation, but she did say that “this situation is taking place in a complex binational context that requires my composure and prudence.”
