DHS Official Says Arresting Democrat Congress Members “On The Table”

Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a CNN interview that arresting the Democrat lawmakers who forced their entry into an ICE detention facility is “on the table.”

"There will likely be more arrests coming," McLaughlin said.

"We actually have body camera footage of some of these members of Congress assaulting our ICE enforcement officers, including body slamming a female ICE officer," she continued.

"We will be showing that to viewers very shortly," she added.

McLaughlin was asked if she suggested arresting members of Congress who protested at the ICE facility.

"This is an ongoing investigation and that is definitely on the table," she answered.

Per Axios:

Democratic members of Congress who were part of a scuffle with law enforcement officers at an ICE facility in New Jersey may face arrests, the Department of Homeland Security confirmed to Axios Saturday.

It would be a major escalation in the Trump administration's arrests of politicians and other public servants, including the mayor of Newark and a judge in Milwaukee.

DHS is accusing the House Democrats of assaulting law enforcement. The lawmakers say they were the ones who were assaulted.

The lawmakers involved in the incident: Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-N.J.), Rob Menendez (D-N.J.) and LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.).

"Bodycam footage obtained by Fox News appears to confirm Rep. LaMonica McIver (in red) elbowing a DHS agent yesterday," Collin Rugg wrote.

"I have yet to hear anyone on this network actually talk about who is in this detention facility. There are members of MS-13, known terrorists, murderers, child rapists. There are some of the worst of the worst in this detention facility," McLaughlin said.

From POLITICO:

A spokesperson for Watson Coleman said her office had not heard from DHS; it had only seen the public statements by the department.

In response to those, Watson Coleman’s office said it had reviewed body camera footage from DHS and that “proves that DHS has been lying about this incident — blatantly lying.”

Though federal law enforcement officials at the scene did tell Baraka to leave a fenced-in parking lot area, which he eventually did before being later arrested, they did not ever appear to ask the members of Congress to leave. But one official appeared to shove McIver as she was trying to re-enter a secure parking lot at the tail end of the chaotic scrum. Baraka is facing trespassing charges and was released from federal custody on Friday night after scores of supporters gathered outside a separate federal facility where he had been held.

McLaughlin alleged one of the members had “body slammed” an ICE officer, something that a POLITICO reporter on the scene did not witness. She told CNN there was a video of the incident that ICE would be released “very shortly.”

Instead, the members of Congress said they had been variously manhandled, roughed up and assaulted.
