BREAKING: Helicopter Crashes Into Hudson River in NYC — Multiple Fatalities (Freefall From Sky)

A helicopter flying over New York City crashed into the Hudson River this afternoon.

Not only did it crash, but the helicopter broke into pieces in midair, with the tail and propeller splitting off completely, before falling down into the river.

Law enforcement say that the helicopter was a tour charter carrying a family on vacation with two children.

At least five people are confirmed dead. Another body has also been pulled from the wreckage in the water.

NBC New York reported:

  • A helicopter broke apart in midair and crashed upside-down into the Hudson River between Manhattan and the New Jersey waterfront Thursday
  • A report of the downed aircraft near the West Side Highway and Spring Street came in shortly after 3 p.m. Thursday.
  • A sixth body was pulled from the water shortly before 5 p.m. today, a senior rescue official said.
  • Earlier, five people were pulled from the water — a pilot, man, woman and two children. Authorities had said at least four of them died at the scene and life-saving efforts were underway on the fifth at a hospital.
  • Three law enforcement sources say the helicopter is believed to have been a tour charter flying along the Hudson at the time of the crash. A cause is under investigation.

Fox News is reporting that all six people onboard have passed away:

At least six people were killed after a helicopter crashed into the Hudson River in Jersey City on Thursday afternoon.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed to Fox News that a Bell 206 helicopter crashed and is submerged in the Hudson River.

While the FAA said the number of people on board “is unknown at this time,” an Associated Press source confirmed six people died in the crash.

“The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) will investigate,” according to a statement from the FAA. “The NTSB will lead the investigation and provide any updates.”

The New York City Fire Department (FDNY) has divers in the water and the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Harbor Unit is searching as well, according to the New York City Mayor’s Office.
