President Trump Shows Off New Gold Card

President Trump has shown off his new “gold card.”

Trump revealed the new visa and said, “For $5 million, this could be yours.”

The gold card will allow wealthy individuals to buy U.S. citizenship for 5 million dollars.

“For $5 million we will allow the most successful job-creating people from all over the world to buy a path to U.S. citizenship,” stated Trump.

Per CBS News:

President Trump on Feb. 25 unveiled a new pathway to residency: a “gold card” aimed at wealthy foreigners willing to pay millions for the right to live in the U.S.

That term is a play on the green card, more officially known as a permanent residency card, which allows non-citizens to live and work permanently in the U.S. Green cards are most frequently awarded to foreigners who marry U.S. citizens or to those who receive one through their employer, with the latter process taking an average of three years to complete, according to the Cato Institute.

“For $5 million we will allow the most successful job-creating people from all over the world to buy a path to U.S. citizenship,” Mr. Trump said in a March 4 speech to a joint session of Congress. “It’s like the green card, but better and more sophisticated. And these people will have to pay tax in our country.”

The new program comes as the Trump administration moves to change the country’s rules for who can legally live, work and gain citizenship in the U.S. That includes tightening restrictions on many types of immigration in the U.S. and pushing to end birthright citizenship, the constitutionally protected right to citizenship to anyone born on U.S. soil.

The U.S. already opens the door to wealthy non-U.S. citizens who want residency through what is known as an EB-5 visa. But that program, launched in 1990, has long been cited for potential abuses, including one prominent case from almost a decade ago that involved owners of a Vermont ski resort embezzling millions from foreign investors who hoped to score visas through the program.

In a move that has sparked both intrigue and controversy, U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick announced the sale of 1,000 Gold Cards this week, raising $5 billion in a single day. Priced at $5 million each, President Trump introduced these Gold Cards in February 2025, as an opportunity for wealthy foreign citizens to work and live in the United States, granting them permanent U.S. residency and effectively replacing the EB-5 immigrant investor visa program.

EB-5s were created in 1990 as a method for immigrants to obtain green cards if they invested at least $800,000 to $1 million in a company that employs at least 10 people. In 2024, more than 12,000 EB-5 visas were issued.

The Gold Visas concept, which was reportedly born from a conversation between financier John Paulson and former President Donald Trump, has already ignited some debates across political, economic and social spheres, especially regarding its fairness. While the financial implications are undeniably significant, the program raises questions about equity and ethics. What will be the long-term impact on U.S. immigration policy? And will U.S. immigration eventually become pay to play only?
