Major Spice Manufacturer Will Reformulate Products To Align With MAHA Goals

Spice giant McCormick is working to reformulate their products in order to align with goals set forth by Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s MAHA movement.

CEO Brendan Foley announced that the company will be removing food dyes and reducing sodium in all of their spice, herbs, and seasoning mixes. Some of their iconic products include Old Bay, Cholula, and Frank’s RedHot.

This change comes in response to RFK Jr.’s initiative to remove food dyes and other potentially harmful ingredients from our food supply. In other words, McCormick is getting ahead of the game.

Smart move.

From Fox Business:

McCormick is working to reformulate products to remove certain ingredients like food dyes that have been scrutinized by Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and some U.S. food regulators as part of an effort to make a healthier America.

McCormick CEO Brendan Foley told analysts of the activity during an earnings call on Tuesday.

“We are seeing a tick-up in reformulation activity,” Foley said, regarding food dyes and sodium, the latter of which he added they’ve always been working on.

Foley continued that such activity was occurring “across our customer base, but also a lot of new product activity, too.”

McCormick manufactures and distributes spices, seasoning mixes, condiments and other flavoring products to consumers and businesses. Foley said, however, that little of its portfolio makes use of food dyes.

The reformulation activity comes as the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement takes root across the country. The agenda aims to improve nutrition, eliminate toxins, preserve natural habitats and fight the chronic disease epidemic in this country, according to its website.

Food Dive added:

McCormick & Co. is working with restaurants and food manufacturers to reformulate products as efforts to ban synthetic dyes in food gain momentum, the ingredient and flavorings giant’s CEO told analysts.

The move to remove artificial food colors has been simmering for years, but the appointment of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to head the Department of Health and Human Services has brought renewed attention to the effort.

“We are seeing a tick-up in reformulation activity and that would align with what you’re seeing and being written out in the news media regarding what we’re hearing from the new administration,” said Brendan Foley, McCormick’s CEO.

McCormick’s portfolio of spices, baking ingredients and other offerings sold to consumers don’t contain a lot of food dyes, Foley said.

Kennedy has called on Kraft Heinz, General Mills and other food companies to remove artificial dyes before the end of his term, Bloomberg reported earlier this month. “Kennedy expects ‘real and transformative’ change by ‘getting the worst ingredients out’ of food,” according to an email sent by the Consumer Brands Association to its members that was viewed by the news agency.
