French Politician Wants the Statue of Liberty Back from America

A French Parliament member is now demanding that the United States return the Statue of Liberty — because Trump!

French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann, who is a member of the country’s Socialists and Democrat group, demanded that Americans who have “chosen to side with tyrants…give us back the Statue of Liberty” during a party convention.

“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home,” he said.

No le backsies!

A French Parliament member is demanding the US return the Statue of Liberty, claiming America has lost its way and no longer stands for what the iconic sculpture represents.

“We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty,’ ” the left-leaning French dip, Raphaël Glucksmann, said during a recent convention of his political party, Place Publique, according to the French newspaper Le Monde.

“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home,” he said as the crowd erupted in cheers.

Glucksmann is a major booster of the Ukraine war and has sharply criticized President Trump for aggressively seeking to pull back on US support for the effort. He also has been a vocal opponent of Trump reducing funding to colleges and research institutions.

She’s been covered by a glacier, smashed up by various giant monsters, and left to decay on a planet overrun by super-intelligent apes. But even in a Hollywood scriptwriter’s worst nightmare, Lady Liberty surely couldn’t be sent back to France. Could she?

French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann, of the Socialists and Democrats group, has set tongues wagging by suggesting that the Statue of Liberty — unveiled in New York in 1886 as a gift from the French people — should be sent back because the United States has chosen to side with tyrants.

With his own tongue in cheek, a grinning Glucksmann told a party convention: “We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty.’”

“We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home,” Glucksmann added, according to local media.

The French MEPs comments are likely in reference to a decision by Washington to pause aid to Ukraine, which it had been helping to fight off a Russian invasion.

While aid is now flowing to Kyiv once again, U.S. President Donald Trump’s perceived softness on Russia, his long-documented admiration for President Vladimir Putin and other strongman leaders, and his public humiliation of Ukrainian Prime Minister Voldymyr Zelenskyy have caused alarm throughout Europe.

This is pretty rich, coming from France.
