Former House Speaker Gingrich Says He’s Found A ‘Very Encouraging’ Sign For Conservatives

Known for leading Republicans during a particularly robust GOP wave in the mid-’90s, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-GA) recently identified what he believes could usher in a new era of conservative dominance on Capitol Hill.

He appeared on the Fox Business Network following the passage of a continuing resolution to fund the government, which was backed by President Donald Trump.

As the Daily Caller reported:

“The new majority leader, John Thune, has worked very closely with Speaker Johnson and President Trump. And it was the team of the three of them that just got this particular continuing resolution through,” Gingrich said.

Gingrich said that this shift is noteworthy given the historical challenges Trump faced in aligning with both the Senate and the House during his first term.

“The Democrats had no impact on it. It’s the most clearly Republican resolution, certainly in the last 20 years. And I think the fact that John Thune was able to work as part of a team, it really says a lot because you’re right. In President Trump’s first term, he had a much difficult relationship with the Senate and the House, for that matter,” Gingrich said. “A team being formed in a way that’s very encouraging.”

The government is on track for a partial shutdown after midnight Friday, and it is anticipated that a sufficient number of Senate Democrats will support Schumer in moving forward with the GOP spending bill, thus preventing a government shutdown.

The legislative win was widely celebrated among Republican officials and conservatives in general:

Trump celebrated the bill’s passage in the House of Representatives earlier this week, per Fox News:

“Big WIN for Republicans, and America tonight,” Trump said in a Truth Social post Tuesday night. “Congratulations to ALL!”

The White House referred Fox News Digital to Trump’s post when asked for additional comment.

The funding bill largely extends funding levels approved during fiscal 2024 as part of the House’s continuing resolution (CR) until Sept. 30.

However, there are some funding changes included in the resolution, including an additional $8 billion in defense spending, $6 billion in veterans healthcare and nearly $1 billion to support Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) deportations. The measure also cuts $13 billion in non-defense spending.

Rep. Thomas Massie, R-Ky., broke with Republicans and voted against the measure Tuesday evening, while Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine, also split with his party and voted in favor of the measure.
