Introducing James Donald Bowman

No, this is not a GOTCHA article….

In fact, it’s the complete opposite.

I’m looking to set the record straight and defend our wonderful Vice President JD Vance.

Because posts like this are floating around which present a very misleading and slanderous picture of JD Vance:

Screenshot here if that gets deleted:

The implication from the post is that JD Vance is a shady character, constantly changing his identity and so clearly he cannot be trusted.

PURE HOGWASH!

Let’s get to the truth, shall we?

Yes, it’s true he did change his name at least twice, you might count three times, but it’s not for some mysterious, shady reasons.

In fact, none of this is mysterious or hidden at all, it’s all fully disclosed and spoken about in his book!  All you have to do is read it!

Here’s the truth:

Yes, it is true that JD Vance changed his name multiple times throughout his life. These changes involved his first, middle, and last names, reflecting shifts in his family circumstances and personal identity. Below are the details of his name changes:
  1. Birth Name: James Donald Bowman
    • JD Vance was born on August 2, 1984, in Middletown, Ohio, as James Donald Bowman. His first name was James, his middle name Donald (after his biological father, Donald Ray Bowman), and his last name Bowman. His parents divorced when he was a toddler, and he had little contact with his biological father afterward.

  2. First Change: James David Hamel
    • After his parents’ divorce, his mother, Beverly, remarried Bob Hamel, who adopted Vance. As part of this adoption, his name was changed to James David Hamel. The middle name “Donald” (tied to his biological father) was replaced with “David” (after an uncle, to preserve his nickname “J.D.”), and his last name became Hamel, reflecting his adoptive father’s surname. This was his legal name for over two decades, including during his high school years, his service in the U.S. Marine Corps (where he was known as Corporal James D. Hamel), and his time at Ohio State University and Yale Law School.

  3. Second Change: James David Vance
    • In April 2013, as he was nearing graduation from Yale Law School, Vance legally changed his last name from Hamel to Vance, honoring his maternal grandparents, James and Bonnie Vance, who primarily raised him amid his mother’s struggles with addiction and a turbulent home life. His grandmother, Bonnie (whom he called “Mamaw”), was a significant influence, and he chose “Vance” to reflect that connection. His first and middle names remained James David, but he continued using the nickname “J.D.” This change did not occur on his wedding day in 2014 (to Usha Chilukuri), as his memoir Hillbilly Elegy might suggest, but earlier, in 2013.

  4. Stylistic Adjustment: JD Vance (no periods)
    • When he entered politics in July 2021, Vance began styling his name as “JD Vance,” dropping the periods from “J.D.” This was not a legal name change but a preference for how he presented himself in print, as confirmed by his campaign to the Associated Press. His legal name remains James David Vance, but he uses “JD Vance” on his Senate website, press releases, and campaign materials.
Summary of Changes:
  • First Name: Remained James throughout, though he has consistently used the nickname “J.D.” since childhood.
  • Middle Name: Changed once, from Donald (his biological father’s name) to David (his uncle’s name), during his adoption by Bob Hamel.
  • Last Name: Changed twice, from Bowman (birth name) to Hamel (adoptive father’s name), and then to Vance (grandparents’ name).
These changes were driven by personal and familial factors, including his parents’ divorce, adoption, and his desire to honor his grandparents, who he credits with shaping his life. The final stylistic shift to “JD” without periods coincided with his political career, aligning with a streamlined public persona.

So there we go!

Hopefully that puts this to rest once and for all.
