Armed Man Near White House Shot By Secret Service


The U.S. Secret Service shot a man near the White House early Sunday morning after an “armed confrontation.”

“The encounter happened near the intersection of 17th and F Streets NW,” NBC News reports.

“Secret Service personnel were involved in a shooting following an armed encounter with a person of interest shortly after midnight on March 9 at 17th and G Streets NW. Media staging area will be at 17th and Pennsylvania,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said.

“Secret Service Uniformed Division Chief Michael Buck provided an on-scene media briefing. Our preliminary statement is below. The @DCPoliceDept will lead the investigation, as they are the primary agency responsible for use-of-force incidents within the District of Columbia,” he added.

The suspect was transported to a hospital and his condition is currently unknown.

The statement also said no injuries were reported among Secret Service personnel, and that the incident was under investigation.

“As officers approached, the individual brandished a firearm and an armed confrontation ensued, during which shots were fired by our personnel,” the statement said.

The incident is now under investigation by Washington’s Metropolitan Police, which investigates all law-enforcement shootings in the District of Columbia.
