Speaker Johnson Confirms Tonight Will Be Historic: “We Had To Do It Earlier Than Normal!”

President Trump will be addressing the nation tonight in what will look and feel like a State of the Union address, but it’s not officially a SOTU.

In fact, most Presidents do not give an address in their first year for obvious reasons — not much has been done from January 20th to March 4th.

In fact, here is what all prior Presidents have done going back 30 years:

  • Bill Clinton (1993–2001):
Inaugurated on January 20, 1993, Clinton delivered his first formal State of the Union address on January 25, 1994—placing it in the second year of his presidency.

  • George W. Bush (2001–2009):
After his January 20, 2001, inauguration, Bush’s first State of the Union address was on January 29, 2002, also occurring in the second year of his term.

  • Barack Obama (2009–2017):
While Obama addressed Congress on February 24, 2009 (just over a month after his January 20 inauguration), his first official State of the Union address was delivered on January 27, 2010—in his second year.

  • Donald Trump (2017–2021):
Trump, inaugurated on January 20, 2017, delivered his first State of the Union address on February 28, 2018, which is in his second year.

  • Joe Biden (2021–present):
Biden was inaugurated on January 20, 2021. Although he did deliver a joint address to Congress on April 28, 2021, his first formal State of the Union address was on March 1, 2023—placing it in the third year of his term.

But Trump’s Presidency is moving in Dog Years and he’s already done more than most accomplish in their whole term, so Speaker Johnson says the wanted to move it up to do it tonight, which will be historic.
