CBS Correspondent Blasts Kamala: “You Were Handed The Nomination, No Primary Process, No Votes, That’s Not How Our System Works”

CBS Correspondent Bill Whitaker didn’t take it easy on Kamala Harris in her latest interview on 60 Minutes.

While interviewing Harris, CBS Correspondent Bill Whitaker told Harris, “You were basically handed the nomination. There was no primary process. There were no votes. That’s not how our system was intended to work.”

Harris responded, “I am proud to have earned the support of enough delegates to become the Democrat nominee.”

Whitaker added, “People don’t even know who you are.”

Kamala quickly responded, “I’ve been in this race for 70 days!”

Per The Hill:

Whitaker also questioned her on several changing positions including once supporting a ban on fracking, looser immigration policies at the border and the concept of Medicare For All, which she stood by when running for the Democratic nomination in 2020.

Whitaker asked if Harris thought that was one reason that Americans say they don’t know her.

“In the last four years I have been vice president of the United States. And I have been traveling our country. And I have been listening to folks and seeking what is possible in terms of common ground. I believe in building consensus. We are a diverse people,” Harris said.

She added, “Geographically, regionally, in terms of where we are in our backgrounds. And what the American people do want is that we have leaders who can build consensus. Where we can figure out compromise and understand it’s not a bad thing, as long as you don’t compromise your values, to find common-sense solutions.”

In past interviews, Harris has responded to similar questions by saying her “values” have not changed on issues like fracking. Her previous opposition to fracking, which her campaign now says it no longer supports, will matter in a critical state like Pennsylvania, where fracking is an important industry.

On the issue of immigration, Whitaker noted that President Biden’s recent crack down on asylum seekers has led to a decrease in illegal border crossings after those numbers quadrupled compared to the Trump administration. Whitaker then asked why the administration didn’t take those steps three years ago.

Here’s another clip of the interview:

Per NPR:

Vice President Harris sat for a wide-ranging interview that aired on 60 Minutes Monday, during which she was pressed for specifics on how she would pay for her economic plans and how she would bring an end to the war in Ukraine.

The interview with correspondent Bill Whitaker followed weeks of criticism from her Republican opponent, former President Donald Trump, that Harris has been unwilling to sit for difficult interviews with the press. Her appearance on 60 Minutes was part of a week-long media blitz that will see Harris appear on programs that include The View, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and The Howard Stern Show.

On the economy, Harris was pressed on how she would pay for economic promises like an expanded child tax credit and tax breaks for first time home buyers and new businesses. A new report from the nonpartisan nonprofit Committee for a Responsible Federal Budget found that Harris’ estimated proposals would cost the government around $3.5 trillion, but Harris said she would offset that by raising taxes on corporations and the highest-earning Americans.

Her answer led interviewer Whitaker to push back, saying, “We’re dealing with the real world here.” Harris responded by saying she believes leaders in Congress are privately ready to listen to her.

“When you talk quietly with a lot of folks in Congress, they know exactly what I’m talking about,” she said, adding that there are “plenty of leaders in Congress who understand and know that the Trump tax cuts blew up our federal deficit.
