Party Calling For GOP Chairwoman’s Removal After Devastating Defeat In Key State

Following a devastating defeat for Republicans in Virginia, many have begun calling for the resignation of RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel.

Democrats now control Virginia’s House, Senate, and Governor positions, spelling trouble for the 2024 election.

Fox News shares more on the election:

Democrats will retain control of the Virginia state Senate and flipped the state House of Delegates from Republicans, according to Associated Press projections, despite GOP Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s attempts to win total GOP control of the state legislature.

The AP projects at least 21 Democrats have been elected to the state Senate and 51 Democrats have been elected to the state House of Delegates. It’s unclear how strong the Democratic majority will be in each chamber.

Virginia’s legislative elections grabbed outsized national attention, with both Democrats and Republicans spending millions on the races, which were viewed in political circles as a key barometer ahead of the 2024 elections for president and control of Congress.

Republicans in Virgnia won elections for governor, lieutenant governor and attorney general two years ago – their first statewide victories in a dozen years – and they flipped the House. The victories in a state that had trended blue over the previous decade energized Republicans nationwide.

Strategists from both parties are looking closely at the results in Virginia’s northern suburbs of Washington, D.C., and around Richmond, for signs that Republicans were able to make any inroads with suburban voters – and especially women – who fled the GOP in recent election cycles.

With such a devastating defeat, GOP members online have been asking for the resignation of Ronna McDaniel.

The Guardian has more on the story:

The possibility of curtailing access to abortion had become a galvanizing issue in Virginia, which is now the last remaining state in the US South without severe restrictions on the procedure. Virginia Democrats correctly predicted that voters’ continued displeasure with the reversal of Roe v Wade would help them flip control of the house of delegates.

“[Republicans] called their plan to ban abortion in Virginia a plan to keep abortion legal in the state and claimed it was just a ‘limit’,” Mini Timmaraju, president and CEO of Reproductive Freedom for All, said in a statement. “Well, tonight, Virginians showed the GOP and Glenn Youngkin exactly what voters have to say about it: We don’t want abortion bans, and we don’t want leaders who do.”

The Virginia results may serve as an indication of where swing voters in battleground states stand ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Virginia has been trending toward Democrats in recent years, as Joe Biden carried the state by 10 points in 2020. But Youngkin’s victory in 2021 proved Virginia remains a battleground state, and Republicans had hoped the governor’s success would deliver them a legislative trifecta in Richmond, but that failed to materialize.

Here’s where I think went wrong in Virginia.

I don’t think getting rid of Ronna McDaniel is the solution.

I believe abortion played a massive role in determining the election.

As much as I disagree with abortions, it is killing the GOP in elections.

It was obvious to Virginians that if the GOP were elected, abortion access would have gone away.

Even Ohio just voted to protect abortion rights.

As much as it might upset you hearing it, the overturning of Roe V. Wade has had disastrous consequences for Republicans.

President Trump himself has said that if he were reelected, he would work towards negotiating some compromise.
